Hello peeps,

I own a hp compaq 8510w upgraded to 4gb ram and 160gb memory with windows 7 home 32 bit i guess...

I've got a huge problem: I was just doing my things browsing, and decided to open windows media player for some music...
So i opened windows media player... Which took very long tho.. Suddenly blue screen of death appears and my laptop rebooted..

So it rebooted... but whenever it's starting up windows it's getting blue screen of death again! Every time! Even in safe mode and every mode there exist in here... i end up at blue screen of death...

So i tried windows startup repair.... After 24 hours.... Still trying to search....

So after that i try to install ubuntu like i did on my older hp compaq... Which is nice so i can atleast get my files back (Dblttu/Animera 2 projects that i am working the previous 5 years and my bussinessplan and other things.... Which i really do not want to lose!!!!)

So i had some empty DVD+R left and installed ubuntu on it again put it in this compaq... And yes this one is somehow not available to installing without replacing windows 7...

Normally if i have problems i use google to solve it but this time i couldn't find anything and i am a bit lazy so i try to check first the pro's in here!

Now my questions are....

How can i fix this problem with the blue screen of death?
Without losing all mine files? If so, how to reach or recover my files again?

I am now on test mode of ubuntu with the DVD+R since the installation doesn't work, Can i do something from here?

I also got a another hp compaq nc2400 which works meh... But if i need to use it, i got the possibility..

Kind regards,

Lagmacun

You could just takeout the harddrive and install it in another computer?

Moving the drive to another computer is indeed often the easiest, provided he has another computer that can hold a spare drive.

Which version of Ubuntu do you have? If you have 14.04+, in Live mode, don't you have something like "X GB Volume"? IIRC the installed harddrives are usually placed on the desktop and/or in the launcher, or you can see them in the file manager ("Files", a little file cabinet in the launcher) under "Devices". It should be similar in older versions but probably not identical.
If you can't see the drive there you'll probably need to mount it manually. This might help with that: http://superuser.com/questions/352157/mount-ntfs-windows-partition-on-ubuntu-live-cd

Blue screen of death is usually caused because of memory problems, try take out the ram and put it back in again. Also, what kind of ram did you buy? are you sure its compatible with your laptop? im talking about DDR2/DDR3 and the speed e.g. 1600/1866

The hard drive could do with formatting, best way is to plug it into another computer to get your files and format it completly. Then plug it back into your laptop and install a new OS

Hello everyone thanks a lot for your comments @Loth Gena @forgee @vTune

I've tried to solve this with windows recovery essentials.. Somehow it didn't work i've tried to install ubuntu but somehow i cannot use 2 os on this newer laptop..
However when i tried the try ubuntu option the second try i could somehow reach my windows files without doing anything... on my other laptop with ubuntu i had to do a few things in terminal...

So i can luckily recover all mine files... I like ubuntu it's very cool.. But i dislike that working with wine isn't stable and that i have to install everything with terminal..
So can anyone get me a SAFE i repeat, SAFE win 7 os?

I've bought this from a refurbished store and i already noticed it got more RAM and such then one by default..I do not know exactly how or with what he upgraded it...

But i think he isn't good at refurbishing stuff, because when i've bought it it seems having a few spyware and toolsbars which i had to recover it myself (lol)..

Also any idea where i could save my files? Its over 32gb (my flash drive). But my files are bigger i do not seek to put everything in a .zip file again and unpack... And my other laptop got like 20gb memory... (I know its gay)
I want to fix it fast does anyone know any good online storage website for free? For at least enough gb for like 100gb? because putting on my flash drive and then on my other laptop and and then put more files on my flash drive again and then reinstall os and then put them all back together
ain't not fun.

Especially because one got a messed up battery charger, the other one got a messed up battery....

Hello,

@dominique120 Well about the BSOD i do not remember anymore..

What i have done is:

- Burning hiro's bootCD and wiped out my whole hard drive..
- Burning several windows 7 iso's by torrent.. (I do not have the cd or any license code, i bought it like this in a store, with windows 7 on it even tho a sticker on my laptop says: designed for microsoft windows XP..)

However none of those CD's are bootable somehow whatever i do (yes i know the trick to change the startup style)
Even from the link you gave me @Codinablack

So far installing a new OS won't work.. Even ubuntu...

I can try ubuntu, but installing it won't work when i can decide to erase whole disk to put ubuntu or try something else...
The continue/install now button is always greyed out..

When you try to install Ubuntu and it asks you to choose where to install, are you also unable to choose "Something else"?

This guide may be useful http://askubuntu.com/questions/3432...artitioning-during-installation/343370#343370 or here are a few more options http://askubuntu.com/questions/343268/how-to-use-manual-partitioning-during-installation

As for Windows, it's a long time since I burned a DVD from an ISO but which program are you burning in? I remember having trouble burning bootable DVDs in ImgBurn I think it was, but the built in ISO burn tool in Windows 7 has been rock solid.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/dd451080.aspx

I don't know if that is any help but I hope you get your computer sorted out soon. Good luck!

@forgee i've tried every option but still greyed out, tried to google it none of them works...
I also have ubuntu installed on this laptop...

I've tried: imgburn, iso burn tool, free easy burner, poweriso, magiciso, winiso..

I'm guessing that the computer is too old to boot from flash drive? If not I have an awesome program for making a bootable flash drive from any .iso image... When you try to boot from disk with a windows 7 .iso what happens? Do you own a Drive wiper, you may want to do a zero write to it just in case. There are plenty of free wipers out there, but the best probably for your situation would be DBAN. I can help you with the licensing part if you ever get it installed. Check the bios also, there may be something in there that is preventing access to your harddrive that would be necessary for an OS install, you really never know....

@Codinablack

Im booting from my DVD drive, i bought ten empty disks and i burn the iso on it..
I do not know whats wrong but i guess it is the iso's

Because if i boot hiren bootCD(Containing a lot of freeware for like everything like repair, registry, backup, wiping hdd, virusscanner etc.), or ubuntu it will run...
But the other ones....

"Non-system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready"

If you are able to read your files that you had on your hdd while using the ubuntu, then problem isn't your hard drive, it's the bios. Do me a favor. First go into your bios and restore all default settings. Save, exit, reboot. If that doesn't work, then shutdown. Unplug your computer, and take out the battery if it is a laptop. Leave it without power sources for lets say 30 seconds, then try to reboot again. If that doesn't work, post here and let me know, there may be some other options....

You may have to take out a battery from your motherboard. I am not sure. There seems to be a lot of people with the same problem from either compaq or hp products. Anyways, if those ways didn't work, but like I said, if you can still run ubuntu or something and see all your files on your hdd, then it's obviously not the hdd, you can do run some disk check utilities to confirm or deny. It's harder to diagnose a problem like this without being right there seeing the boot, the bios, the everything. Anyways try a look here to see if you can find a solution.

Can you run a memtest to see if the RAM is OK? You can boot the Ubuntu disk and in the Grub menu (during startup) choose Memtest.

And as @Codinablack said, take out the battery, but with the battery out you also press and hold the power button for 10 seconds.

@Codinablack

However it worked at last! I just tried to burn again the torrent on a new dvd somehow it worked on this one..

Thank you all for helping me! I've could save 90% of my files when i was on ubuntu tryout..
However because of some input/output error when i was copying files to my flash drive some might be messedup...

But i think i am allright now, if there is anything i will just post again hehe

Thanks a lot! Now i can finally continue working on mine projects!
