Happy Eid to all muslims

EID - is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting (sawm). The religious Eid is a single day and Muslims are not permitted to fast that day. The holiday celebrates the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadan. The day of Eid, therefore, falls on the first day of the month of Shawwal. This is a day where Muslims around the world try to show a common goal of unity.

Not meaning to start an angry debate here I just have a question regarding the fasting period you guys have.

What I've heard (don't know if it's true haven't bothered to look it up)

*You may not eat during the day only during the night
*You are doing this to show respect or feel how poor people without food has it

The second point there is false, I assume? As it's really easy fasting during the day then stuffing yourself after the sun gone down. It's just as if you're changing eating habits from eating at the day to eating at the night. You're not really fasting then if you're seeing it from a 24 hour perspective.

Just interested whats the reason for fasting is.
