Honestly, if it's feasible I'd actually suggest to highlight the item in quadrants.Or just calculate the remaining time of all the gems in that item and use that time to determine the color. It would show if that particular item has any effects left, not just for 1 gem so you don't know if it's the last one running out of time or not.
If you can equip 4 gems, just highlight each area with a colour. green / yellow / red
If a gem has no 'juice' left, colour it white, so you can see that a gem is still socketed, and needs to be recharged.
If the gems disappear completely after they've been used up, then just stop highlighting altogether.
