Heres the thing...
It costs around (if not more than...)$10,000 USD to take someone to court for illegal downloads. Very very few people are willing to waste that money on people who download. However those who are uploading are the source, they are willing to spend that money to cut people off from their source.
When you use torrents, you are downloading and uploading at the same time. And when you strictly seed it is even worse. Not only that but you are always broadcasting your IP to anyone else connected to that torrent.
There are tons of companies that make a killing by connecting to torrents, grabbing the list of IPs, finding out who they belong too, and giving that information to the license holders for prosecution.
The only thing I trust is Rapidshare, and I'm more than willing to pay $10USD/Month in order to get all the music/movies/games/programs I could ever want at very stable speeds (with my connection, around 3mb/s).
Why do I trust Rapidshare? Because the German Government took them to court and the government -LOST-. Rapidshare refused to hand over it's user's information and stuck by that. I know my download history and account information is very very safe with them.
In closing...Torrents may be 100% free, but it does make you a very good target for prosecution and nobody will protect your privacy, since you are broadcasting your identity to the world.
