I play WoW, all he would have to say is he got hacked which in this case would be true. Also Blizzard is A LOT different then Cipsoft, for example over 13 million people play WoW Cipsoft is lucky to get 40 thousand.

Though, Blizzard does not do backups of the servers just because of one player. They do not save single backups for every player, that would just take too much space.

I was told you needed to enter a password when I played 2 years ago or so. Sorry then.

But I gotta say that it's pretty stupid that entering "delete" is enough, even if you can get back the character by contacting them (which I've heard as well).
