Hello, my name is Sean and I am from the U.K.

As stated in the title, I am a software engineer with around 2 years commercial experience. I am looking for an interesting project to learn new things & motivate me to do some after work Continued Professional Development.

I am happy to offer support for free as I am doing this to learn something new.

I have never worked on an OTserver before so it will likely be a bit of a learning curve.

I am proficient in:
  • C#
  • Devops & Automation

I have experience in (but I am probably a little ropey):
  • C++
  • C
  • Typescript / Javascript / HTML & markup languages generally speaking
  • Aurelia
  • PowerShell
  • Java (pretty similar to C# so I can get by)

Availability
I work Monday - Friday (finishing at around 7pm) 9 days out of 10.
I am available on weekday evenings for as long as I can keep focus & every other Friday I have the full day.
I am also available on weekends.

I will do my best to find time when you need it but I do also have a life & a job which will take priority.

Extra info
This post feels very 'doom and gloom' so I thought I would include a bit more info to, hopefully, lift the tone.
I have been playing Tibia (and still do) since around 2006 & OTservers since around 2010. I have never been a super high achiever in RL tibia and similar in the Otservers but I absolutely love the game 🤓

I love a good puzzle quest, this is the main reason I have spent so much time in OTservers with a low player count that are usually passion projects by the hoster.
I have also spent some time playing in war teams and I am still in contact with a couple of those teams.

You didn't quite mention what you're interested in working on:

Is it mostly OpenTibia scripting or is it full blown software development?
What type of SWE are you: front/back end, full stack?
And are you particularly interested in a section of the stack to develop your skills on?
Are you interested on learning a new language, a particular framework?

Anyhow, if you're interested, check out my project (in my signature), I’ll take all the help I can get :p

I’m not building a server in particular but an entirely new engine. It’s written in C# with net core, and it's nowhere near to the distributions you see around here in terms of feature parity, but it’s the most documented open-source OpenTibia project you’ll find. I'm targeting 7.72 as a start because of the consistency of the leaked CipSoft assets.

Also this means you have the opportunity to choose/learn how you'd implement a fully functional system on every stack of the backend (and even a front end if you'd like).

I won’t go easy when you try to merge code, since there is a certain standard I want to maintain, but I can promise the same level of code review and comments I put into when reviewing code professionally (at Microsoft).

Its funny that you are the first person to reply to my post - I was looking through your fibula-mmo repository this morning 😁

What do you mean by OpenTibia scripting vs software development? Found it hard to answer this as I am not sure what you mean by it.
Is it meant that OpenTibia scripting = something like editing a few lua files
vs
software development = being game engine, database, front end?

If so, software development.

If you mean, 'Am I interested in working on some other projects outside of OpenTibia?', the answer is maybe.
I posted in OTland because I have had a 15 year long interest in Tibia and I thought, if there's anything that will motivate me to do some extra CPD outside work, CPD involving Tibia will probably be a good bet.
If there was another project that I thought was particularly interesting though then I would not say no to exploring that either.

What type of SWE are you: front/back end, full stack?
I was backend but in the last 12 months I have also been working on front end stories - hence a little ropey on TS / JS / HTML
Maybe something like 3/4 of a stack currently 😅

And are you particularly interested in a section of the stack to develop your skills on?
I am interested in working on any part on the stack

Are you interested on learning a new language, a particular framework?
No specific interest in learning a new language, I had planned to just take the opportunities presented themselves.

If I had to give some steer, I would probably look for a chance to work with angular as it seems to be a lot more popular than Aurelia so probably a good framework to gain some experience in.

Hi
Would you like to pick this up / help out with this project? (Includes custom server, and custom otclient.)
( You can find latest sources here: "Lyky35/TheForgottenTibia (https://github.com/Lyky35/TheForgottenTibia)" // Note: I can provide 'working' web if you want/need it, based on MyAAC.)

I think the development should be more entertaining, interesting as its not "real tibia type" stuff that has been flooding the scene for decade.

In exchange I can provide you with a host, an OVH box in USA with decent specs where you can run/test the build for free / or even host the server if you want. (I don't care what you use it for, as long as its legal.)

Any other limits or requirements for the projects? Open source? Non-profit? Interesting technology used? Easy tasks or difficult tasks? Servers only?
A ton of people, myself included, would like to work with someone that works for free of course :)

If part of your interest is helping the open tibia community out, I'd like to recommend working on bug fixes and improvements on otclient or otclient1.0 since otclient is by far the most used, broken and outdated software on here everything considered.

Personally I'm working on a bunch of, I think, interesting projects, but most of them are private, so I believe it won't be very interesting to you unless you're just interested in the work and/or seeing the results afterwards.
Only open source projects I'd be interested on working on together are otclient, opentibia/various tools, and possibly downgraded TFS.

Edit: Some topics I'm exploring: Implementations of encryption and obfuscation, writing an ots from scratch, studying otclient, packet analysis, sysadmin stuff, open source groupware and wiki software, writing various tools and web apps/simple API's, simple graphical apps.

Thanks for the responses guys :) I have committed to a couple of responses of the back of this thread so for now will be focusing on those.

Preference for open source projects tbh, Interested mainly in C# / web technologies. Had a few interesting uptakes on this already so will be focusing on those for now but thanks for the response!

Hey Kkkkkkkkkkkkkk, when you say interesting project, are you up to listening to an ot project to see if you want to help it, or at least help with one step or two? If so, are you still listening to proposals? Answer me with a PM if you want to read a general concept of my idea through PM, to then decide if you want to know all of it. I'm a writer and a mapper and I'm not doing this for personal profit. I hope to see you soon.
