I remember back in the day there were a huge number of truly free servers, but these days all require payments of some kind. By truly free I mean ones where every meaningful bit of content is free and the only stuff you actually have to pay for are cosmetics like outfits or mounts (caveat with mounts, a free "boring" one must exist that provides the same kind of speed advantage as the cool paid ones). E.g. you have access to all areas, you can get a house (for as long as you can make the in-game gold rent), etc.

Any servers like that still around? Or had the greed consumed it all? Because if I were to pay subscription fee for a silly 2D MMO, I'd rather pay it for the official Tibia where I know that Cipsoft won't ban me for unreasonable things like hurting admin's feelings and won't just run with my money (and possibly credit card info) while closing the server.

I will release a 7.4 server soon. The premium account will be available for in-game gold. I haven't decided yet on the price, it should increase together with inflation. For example, 10k the first week of the server release, then 20k after it, all the way to around 30 to 50k for 30 days of premium. While it is not completely free, people can still enjoy the game the same way as anybody who buys premium scrolls in other servers, but instead of giving extra power to those who pay to win, it simply "burns" the money and keeps a stable economy.

The premium account will also be available for real money (I have to pay the server expenses), but not a scroll that can be sold to people. The premium account is directly added to the account that buys it, and cosmetics backpacks. The "rune" kind of backpacks.

Everything else will need to be obtained in-game, outfits given in quests or factions. I will remove some items from the quests and give the outfits. There could be a chance of adding outfits to the store, since there are just too many of them. I can't fit all of them inside the game, or people will be gaining outfits for stupid reasons, but not currently on my schedule to add them to the store.

Let me know ur opinion on it. Is it "free" enough? Let me know if you have another idea, besides making it 100% literally free. The idea would be to make the player spend between 4 to 8 hours a month to pay for their premium account. It is not a huge advantage for someone who pays for it in in-game gold against real money.

Are you even 18+?

- How can they get away with your CC info by using third party official payment gateway providers? Noone has insight.

- People in the OT/gaming scene has high expectations, which means a lot of hard work and/or money needed to invest to even attract people.
Your copypasta 999x rates 1 hand-made map server won't work anymore, Imagine having a family aswell with limited resources.

- I've already tried running a server with just cosmetics, it's not profitting at all. At best if you had custom unique cosmetics, but that requires skill/time or money, just so other devs steal it from you and saturate it again. People with money will always have a advantage this could be better pc specs, faster internet, IP bypass to MC, More expensive bots or unique bot developed by hiring a pro, buying in-game currency/items for real money or a character/account for real money.... you can't stop it. That's how life works.

Asking for awesome super duper server for free with free hosting and free marketing is like living in a fantasy. In the end OT's survive by those who actually spend on their servers, people who are not willing to spend any dime cuz being a cheapskate shouldn't even bother to have a opinion, atleast not this weird unrealistic one.

My server is totally free, but population is low (now waiting till december wipe, but I think it is a great moment to try it before new edition), because it is really niche, simple ots with custom features - a hobby project that resurrects childhood dreams, made for myself and every new player is a profit for me.

We have premium for 5 euro a month that lets you own a house. A house gives you unlimited access to storage. Which is heavily limited otherwise. But other than that, every piece of content in the game is freely available to everyone. No restrictions whatsoever.

To be honest if you want to provide great service in terms of stability, advertising, keep high player count - it requires money. Of course you can buy own server, plug it into your local infrastructure and keep cost low. Keep in mind that security these days ain't free. I neglect here payment for OTS support, mappers, scripters etc.

And i'm talking based on my experience. I run server for my friends & I and few players joined us but cost is 10 euro monthly. There is no pacc nor e-shop. I pay it as a "hobby subscription" and payment for having fun with further development. But let's be honest, there is no advertisement, anty ddos protection can't be compared to the most famous OTSes. If you want to pay 200 euro monthly as a hobby project and still maintain server and answer complaints then most likely it will be annoying to stick to the "FREE" tag. These servers can appear to build a brand in a short time (kinda investment), but then they change their free policy when higher player base arrive.

There is my Thais War 8.6 OTS with 0 players, but there are 70+ bots fighting. It's online for 2+ years. There is no way to buy anything for money.
You can create own account on:
or use GOD account:
Code:
ppp
ppp

You can connect using IP Changer or OTClient:
Code:
IP: arm.skalski.pro
Port: 7171
or use website client (Chrome/Firefox browser recommended, does not work on mobile phones):

So there are totally free servers, but often not popular.

Hosting OTS for 50-100 players online costs around 5 EUR per month (4 cores, 8 GB RAM, VPS-1 in ovh.com).

that is my goal, but at some point I always end up giving up because doing everything by myself is boring and a chore, and it might not even get two players at all. Plus, I realized that the systems I want to implement were already used extensively and my taste for things are quite "unique" among my friends, so if even my friends dont like my choices, I dont think too many people will

I know right - all I can say is don't worry. I am working on my for about last 6 years (with longer breaks ofc) and always on new edition I end up spending more time on playing it than creating or just fixing bugs/making different content than planned due to influence, help and dedication of some players that stay with me. I really take my time, don't rush and often also visit other servers or different games to not burn out too fast and catch some inspiration.

Back in time i remember it wasn't actually that financially expensive to get this all set up and learn to customise servers.
I would assume by now it's far easier to learn and manage, but regardless it will take time to maintain.
I also think server costs can get troublesome if enough attention and interest is reached.

And the time it takes to keep the server fresh was quite a challenge. Even if you created system to make unique items, monsters, npcs and spells.
It still took quite some effort to fit them together.
Repetitve or scaling minigame challenges helped but, expectation of more endgame content always lurked around.

Somewhat feel like crowdsourcing funding to keep the server alive seems more lasting experience, but this must also include clear pathways to coordinate expectations and ideas in resource effective way

Damn greedy OT hosters who spend their own time and money to keep up a silly 2d open tibia server for you and other players to actually enjoy.

Funny how some people think you can run a server without any form of monetization... what goes through their heads?

You’ve got an OT admin spending 2–3 hours a day (at least) editing, creating content, managing infrastructure, promoting the server, dealing with toxic players, and everything else that comes with it — and still paying all the costs out of pocket. Even for a small server, there’s always some cost. Why the hell would anyone spend their time and money just so others can play for free?

Most Tibia players are adults now. If you’re enjoying the server, what’s so hard about spending 5 or 10 euros to support the person keeping it alive — improving it, adding new content, and keeping things running?

The real problem is that most players today are hooked on instant dopamine — TikTok, Instagram, quick rewards… they can’t stay more than a week or two on the same server. Then they think, “If I donate 5 or 10 euros to every server I try, I’ll go broke…” Well, then maybe stop hopping from server to server. These days, 90% of OTServList is made up of seasonal servers because of the players, not the admins. I seriously doubt most OT admins want to keep resetting their worlds all the time.

Even global Tibia does it — launching new worlds every few months, all because of this same community that wants everything instantly.

The game feels great when you’re leveling 10–20 times a day. But when you hit that stage where it takes a full day just to gain one level, boredom kicks in and people quit.

Anyway, I just meant to make a short point, but ended up writing an essay.
