Hey I was thinking of "renting" one of those dedicated servers, and I was wondering how hard it is to learn linux,
if it's worth it, and the best for beginners of linux you'd reccomend?
I'm only thinking of hosting maybe a website and a server on it. I'd prefer the cheapest available.

So basically just looking for sites you'd reccomend and what I should use to get started. ^^

u are from ?

You should start with Linux Ubuntu, try download it from its website and try learn it for a while before renting a dedicated server with the os linux.

Why I would choose Linux ubuntu as a start for linux is because it's not text based.

~Sorry for offtopicness (Im curious about something)~

What do you use? Im on a linux course since a while but Im nowhere near a pro or anything, Im also completely lost on how it works in OT/dedics-related stuff, so Im wondering what would be the best to use when it comes to renting a dedicated server?

There's some sites Ive seen where the best dedics run on Debian or CentOS.

And also like how does it work? You get remote access to the dedic server through the terminal and you send your files and control your server all from the terminal? I think Im making it a bit confusing but oh well try ur best on understanding my question :)

Thanks in advance.

Ok, I downloaded ubuntu to a dvd-r and I'm testing it out on my computer, but when I rent a dedicated server, how does webmin work? Like do I get full control of a desktop or something like remote control?

dvd-r? its enough to download intrepid ibex from ubuntu.com ;)
if you install a desktop (X11) on the dedicated, you may connect to it through vnc and basicaly control like a local machine. other way is a terminal connection (ssh/telnet) and controling via commands. you can also always install some control panel if you don't want to handle the web-related things manualy (free: ispcp, webmin; paid: cpanel, plesk)

ps. you may find good offers at serverloft.com

Dunno what intrepid ibex is o.o but I just put it on a dvd-r so I could just try it out on my home computer without actually having to uninstall windows..

I know I just didn't have any blank cds. lmao Got plenty of dvd-r's, but how did this become so off-topic so fast to something completley irrelevent. o.o
Last question for now, how much does it normally cost to get a dekstop installed? And is it worth it for someone with no experience in this sort of thing? Or is a terminal connection or free control panel easy enough for a beginner?

if you have experience with eg. dos, terminal may be enough. otherwise you need a desktop os and if you're going to host a www, some free control panel (ispcp is very cool one).
