Are you buying a dedicated server? Want some links or some help? This is the thread!

Server Locations (I only post the best links possible)

If you want me to post a link, just PM or message here.

What is a "Dedicated Server"?

A dedicated hosting service, dedicated server, or managed hosting service is a type of Internet hosting in which the client leases an entire server not shared with anyone. This is more flexible than shared hosting, as organizations have full control over the server(s), including choice of operating system, hardware, etc. Server administration can usually be provided by the hosting company as an add-on service. In some cases a dedicated server can offer less overhead and a larger return on investment. Dedicated servers are most often housed in data centers, similar to colocation facilities, providing redundant power sources and HVAC systems. In contrast to colocation, the server hardware is owned by the provider and in some cases they will provide support for your operating system or applications.

Why would I buy a Dedicated Server?

Do you have not the greatest computer? Do you not have a good updated operating system? Do you need a better speed then the original 10/10mbps? This is why people buy a dedicated server. Also, more ports are opened. Alot of ISP's (Internet Server Provider) block the "site" port 80. Used by the program, XAMPP. You will get the fastest internet, and good specs. You also need around $120 to buy a decent dedicated server.

Does my ISP provide this "Dedicated Server"?

Well, some of ISP providers may let there customers rent a dedicated server or a "VPS" (Virtual Private Server) which is not recommanded since it's a shared 100/100mbps connection (May incounter problems and not the fastest speed!). This is all depended where you live, and what ISP you have.

Recommendations
  • 1x Intel Xeon DP E5405, 1x Quadcore
  • 4 GB DDR2-RAM
  • 100/100mbps Connection
  • 3,000-5,000 GB data trasnfer

This is what I think, If you don't want to follow it, or have another recommendation, then post it! Feel free to do so.

If any questions post them, If any suggestions, or any links should be added or information, please feel free to do so!

Mods maybe this should be stickied?

Serverloft is Germany...Also if line quality was important I would just go with leaseweb (Netherland). They got the by far best lines in Europe, both in transfer and ping time. If require 10gbit lines, or servers in France, and ping time is not important (you can accept 100ms+), go with OVH. In Germany I would suggest Hetzner, they are cheap, provide ok lines, ok services. Gives you same quality as Serverloft (Serverloft is just a bunk of previous Hetzner employers, but they are doing a good job).

exportal.pl have all their servers in Germany and Netherland...

He's a certified reseller there, he lost reputation here on OTLand ever since he posted his offers.

Obviously none of you guys does actually know what a reseller is and it's not a bad thing at all.

Firstly, you should check this site out: http://www.google.se/search?hl=sv&d...&oi=glossary_definition&ct=title&ved=0CAcQkAE

and choose one of the following sites linked on that page.

2. "The definition of a reseller is that you order something from another company and you sell it through your own company. A reseller does normally have a percent of discount that he can use on the products that the company offers. The reseller's clients has not the right to know if the reseller is reselling products from another company but can choose to tell the clients if they want to, but the reseller does not have the right to tell the clients that they do own the dedicated servers and they are operational in a datacenter provided by the resellers themselves."

An example of companies who are resellers in Sweden: ICA, COOP (Watch stores) and cinema's.

However, Crewebs has a sole proprietorship in Sweden and is being runned legally.

Please do not talk trash about Crewebs, I assume that you wouldn't want people to talk trash about your company, if you would have one.

I think we know what a reseller is, but when you resell for a bad company (in terms of quality) you basicly sell shit. Something like firstprice in your example.

Well, I guess you got a point there but it really depends on what kind of applications you are planning to use. For an example, if you use a huge distribution on a 512 MB RAM server with a low processor, then it's quite obvious that the server will crash. However, we have been having good feedback on our 2 GB RAM and up servers, none of the servers that we provide has ever crashed except some of our 512 MB/1GB RAM servers but they were rebooted within an hour after downtime, so basically it's not shitty servers that we resell.

Anyway, I'm out of here, just say whatever you want but I doubt that you would enjoy if someone was talking trash about your company.

Well, I don't have any first hand experience with your company. But i've heard enough about there quality to assume that it's bad. Anyway, you can always just add up with enough SWAP to prvent crashes, just make huge lag. But how is line capasity, line pingtimes etc?

If you'll please post total capasity, how many people share them, network uptime (etc last 6 months), power uptime (etc last 6 months) and ping from several locations (Europe and the US), it will be alot easier to judge.

He ("They") can't because.. well they "resell" same shit IGSOBE sells (IGSobe Dedicated Server Comparison Chart)

If you need proof IGSOBE sucks, just google ;)

I wonder why 2nd result is "Stay away from John C. Young @ IGSoBE.com -- he killed my company ..." if the company is that good :peace:

Yes, but I already know (and posted it), but since he still think it's good quality I asked him to provide this. You can easily keep some track of things if you wanted too. Still, no responnd so.

Crewebs is shit..
True. I ordered a dedicated server from that company. Took me 2 weeks before I got any information. After the 2 weeks I login and what do I see? Nikksters old database.. wtf?
