IF i map and i have an idea i could map endless and finish it...

But when i try to fill random nature or atleast filling the world map (outside spawns and such)..
I get some kind of writers block because i do not know how the fuck i will fill this and with what...

any good tips? Anyone having this problem either?

Yes, I have this problem but I tend to make the shape as long as I map... That way you don't have to deal with 'filler' landscapes. =)

I used to have this issue as well, until I stumbled upon a great way to do it. Basically, what I do is that I open a big map that contains alot of nature & fields that I enjoy, then I simply copy 10x10sqm pieces of nature from the map and paste it onto my own map. Its a great way to accomplish alot of mapping in a short period of time, and if you do it properly nobody will be able to recognize the nature, since if you are smart enough you will take pieces from here and there.

Eventually, you will be able to learn from the patterns you create from copy & pasting maps and it will be easy to create it entirely by yourself... but by that time you will be too lazy to do it since this method is so effective.

this is why custom maps sucks these days, players are expecting actual custom and new stuff they haven't seen before but in 99% of the cases it's just some different pieces taken from all released maps. if i play some tp server it will have spawns & quests from released maps, if i play some real map with custom city it will most likely contain the same spawns and quests from released maps, if i play an entirely "custom" map it usually consists of mainly released stuff.

for example i find your showoff thread for your project hillarious, since it LITERALLY only contains stuff from maps anyone can download and just post a screenshot of.

The best tip I can give when creating a custom map, if you already have a shape, is to work from one end to the other.
If you have ideas for some parts, just write them down. Don't start mapping them.
Mapping outwards from a place, say the first town, makes it possible to plan the whole as you go.
If any of your ideas work when you finally get to that location, try to bind it together with the stuff you've already made.
There's also a possibility that you might've gotten a better idea for it, or a better location for the idea.

It's hard to control the urge to map an idea, but doing so makes it easier to get to that part once you have mapped the part next to it.
Since you already know what you want to have there, it will be easier to plan for it with the surroundings.

@mackan Thanks, i allready drawn a world map plan on paper like 2 years ago... I already know the shape, spawns, quests where they would be... But random nature...
I am always like damnnn what the fuck would i place here another dirt path with grass and some bushes and shit..

I dislike it either when i see released maps because ive seen them like 9999x
Everything i've made is from scratch and some custom sprites.. quests/spawns most of them are finished already... same for desert continent etc.

But random nature still is a problem to me... How would you guys think if i copy/paste pieces from download sections just to fill the nature or something? And update it later?

@Beto06 @whitevo @Ahilphino @Chechlowski Thanks guys!

edit: @Mackan™ the reason i've already made the shape because, at mine previous maps i mapped also first the city then the surroundings, but this way i kinda forced myself some inspiration... and it worked pretty good...

so still in a struggling between downloading random nature and fix later(when server is online and new content will be added), or just fix it right now somehow

I'm going to explain to you what I wrote in my post, since you don't seem to have understood it very good at all. I suggested that Lagmacun could copy small pieces of nature from different places on a big map, and then paste it onto his own map - this way it would not be recognizable at all unless players know the relation between specific trees/bushes/flowers/etc, but even if they do they will not be able to recognize the map once they've walked 5-10 squares. You also need to remember what the topic was about, in this case Lagmacun was looking for help on how he could fill his world map with nature & plains in an efficient and non-exhausting way.

Also, I'm very curious why you bring my personal project into this topic? If you have any hatred towards my server then feel free to constructively bring it up in my own thread, not this one. But I have to ask you, why do you state that the maps in the screenshots I've showed is literally only maps that are in the download section? The majority of the content showed in the screenshots are created by me, and nobody else - yet you are able to draw this conclusion? Besides that I fail to see what is so wrong with using maps from the download section, they are there for a reason and they are barely used in any servers because people are generally afraid of not having their own maps. I promise you, if you were to login to my server you would not be able to tell where the maps are from, since you wouldn't recognize them (with an exception for Okolnir, Demon Oak, Annihilator etc).

If you would like I can show you how the nature would look like, and then you could point at what download thread I got it from?

#1 Like what someone else said above, only map as far as you can. I often just make islands and as I map I 'form' the island more as I go.
#2 what else can be a part of your map? What else can you add in? a quest area? a new hunting spot? etc
Get more inspiration and continue!

@up

Thanks, but i hate to do it on the island way this way i just make caves bridges or teleports to connect them... and i want to give people a feeling like they are walking a huge world... instead of seeing everytime the island edges..
and more traveling on the map.

Most spawns, and quests i wrote all my ideas and if i get more ideas on a notepad, but most of them are allready finished (some need some scripting), i have to mainly fill the random nature.. i've got already a lot of small spawns, or mysteries, and others on my map..

And i can map limitless... I like to map, sometimes i am forcing myself, sometimes i do not touch the map editor for a while... but if i map it will be part of mine project.. I do not understand it, if you map why wouldn't you put it on your own server? And then they later quit but later they start mapping again... Doesn't make sense to me..

I plan my map beforehand, what respaws in which area, what quests, the cities, make some sketch pen and paper. Nothing is set in stone, but gives you a direction.

doing the same over here, when i started this, but random nature is hard, you want it to make look different from other areas, and there should be some big random natures so not every spawn is close and easy to ree barely ideach etc
but after a while you have barely ideas left to fill up the nature...

Why don't you make a small list of what you can add? Try to fill it with grass and trees first after add something to them. Like a ruin, a small bandit camp, maybe a small piece of swamp, a group of mountains, a random house with some random guy who might do something random in the future, some rock patches, some dried grass patches, a corpse with some random monsters around it.... there's lots that you can add.

I've done most of it already, but i try to think outside of the box
