"A man dressed as a ninja and carrying a rifle with a silencer terrorised a group outside a Waikato pub, allegedly pointing the weapon at people and firing shots into the air, it has been reported.
Michael Lawrence Stark, 20, appeared in Hamilton District Court on Monday facing several charges including demanding with menace and committing a crime with a firearm.
He is due to undergo a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation and will be held in custody until his reappearance next month.
Stark, who wore a ninja mask and was dressed all in black, allegedly pointed a rifle at a number of people outside the Taupiri Hotel, 20km north of Hamilton, on Saturday, the New
Zealand Herald reports.
He demanded cash from a number of people before firing three shots into the air, the court heard.
It was further alleged Stark pointed the rifle at the head of a driver who had just pulled into the carpark.
Stark ran off but was found by police and members of the armed offenders squad.
Publican Bob Gamble said it appeared Stark was wearing what looked like a samurai sword on this back.
Stark also faces a number of charges from the night before, including the theft of an $80,000 tractor which he allegedly defaced with the words: "The first rule of fight club is you do not talk about fight club."
