I did something similar when I've started mapping. Quite nice, you will improve, I'm sure of that. But you gotta keep it up, so do it.
 
If you want to be a successful mapper - you have to get similar with all of the sprites there are - in your map editor. The works like you shown us here - helps you to do that. Try to match them together, detail whole ground areas with them. That's like 40% of mapping success. The rest depends on your skills, imagination, talent and the time you put to make your vision reality. I was once in the past consider as on of the best mappers in Poland (old good times). Thanks to practice - and nothing else.
