Hi all,

I started helping another Developer with a very interesting project. (9.81 client server)

We do have a disagreement though. It is his server so he can do whatever he wants but my issue is this.

He wants players to choose a "Race" and be the creature for the entire game.
For example you'd choose to be the "Fish Race" and your character will look like a fish the entire game and each race will have a bonus trait.

From experience I have found that most players prefer the human outfits so you can change colors, have addons, use mounts, etc. but he doesn't even have a "Human" race so you will never have access to all the real tibia outfits.

What do you think? Is it important to have RL Tibia Outfits with Addons and Mounts? Or would choosing a creature be more fun?
Let me know by voting on the Pole and if you have something to say please reply.

Outfits are a "Fun" side factor.
You could have the best outfits ever, it wont make your server any better.

Focus on server development, outfits come last.

On note, picking a race, is a lot different than just having an "outfit" if the race has bonuses extra feats etc, in my opinion that's a lot better than the average Tibian outfits, but it depends on how you want your server to be.

Every server aspect matters.

There ARE players out there that if they log on and don't like the outfits available, before even trying the server, they will log off and never come back (and it's a fairly large percentage).

Thanks for replying though, because if we did get rid of the "Races" we would definitely lose a addition to gameplay, but we'd gain the ability to use mounts, and addons.

Unless you have actual statistics, i wouldn't go assuming that there are a large portion of idiots playing OTs just for outfits, now i say "idiots" because if you're playing a server purely dependent on what "Outfits" you can have, well.. i think the rest is self explanatory.

I'm not going to vote on the poll for extremely obvious reasons, but I'll state some points for both arguements.

1. Races

Having races (and race outfits) locks the player into what appearances they can be in game.

Appearances aren't everything, but they ARE something. People want to feel good when they look at their character, call it neat, badass, whatever, they want to like what they are.

The race system allows people to have a wide variety of outfits they can choose from, and I think personally, it is nice to move away from the norm, and be able to choose to be things you normally wouldn't be allowed to in other games. Example: Plenty of people, for kicks, have roleplayed as magical talking chairs in DnD and games like that, and people can have fun with it, but still be in a serious manner as well. This can go hand and hand with more "serious" races such as a gyrognome, or a talking pony, because it is just a game, and just because someone picks something more "normal/typical" doesn't mean the other player isn't having as much fun. Games are serious, but in the end they are also about fun, and giving players options to go outside of the norm with some things keeps things way more lively and less boring, than the typical western RPG world sets.

Furthermore, the race system gives the ability to give special traits based on what race they are. This alone is a very nice mechanic, and I don't think I need to explain how this makes things more indepth.

The reasoning for not using standard "human" race as we see on tibia, and their outfits, as they have been used time and time again, and are a bit worn out in my mind. Also, there are way more standard human outfits than there are any other race on Tibia, which would give one race WAY more options on how they appear.

I'd rather use a few of the standard outfits on some races, and try to keep the outfit choices close to one another.

Also, with outfits being so connected with race, visually people can look at the screen (not using the look command) and know RIGHT AWAY what the other person is, which is a great mechanic.

The biggest draw back here is that it limits greatly the ability to make quests/missions for different oufits/addons, and this limits what we can give out as rewards for missions.

2. Standard Tibia Outfits

The strongest point(s) here is that people are used to it, and we can give out outfits/addons as rewards to missions.

If you think this is a small point, you're dead wrong.

How many of real tibia quests end with you getting a new outfit, or an addon, or even a mount?

What about WoW? How long do people spend playing that God awful game just to get some mount?

This can be a very big cornerstone for an online mmo, and it's mission system, and completely make a game in some senses (got to collect them all!)

The problem here is that you can't have racial traits, and visual instant recognization of what a player is.

Also, some "feel" of the game is taken away too.

When you have a race system, you better believe there will be some a-hole that says "I'm best Orc Warrior ever"

People in general like to have a feel of who there character is/they are, and having a race system allows to enhance that feeling

People care about who they are playing, and if they see something looks "stupid" right away, they might just fuck off and not give the game a chance at all.

You know how many douchebags said League of Legends looks cartoony years ago, and wouldn't play it, because they had some sort of graphical superiority complex associated to HoN or Dota?

Obviously, we see that LoL won that battle, but there were still tons of people who went "BLAH BLAH, I WON'T PLAY THAT IT LOOKS CHILDISH BLAH BLAH BLAH"

Or hell, there are plenty of other games that had weird art styles, that lost A-LOT of playerbase because of their art style choice. They could have simply went with something more mainstream, and hooked in alot more buyers, but didn't because of personal opinion.

Personal opinions really do drive people, and what outfits/how they look/how the game looks do matter.

It doesn't have to be the best graphics of all time, but it has to be appealing and not turn people away.

Last point, how many people can take Katamari Damacy serious?

Not many, because it looks like a hyper colour rainbow on lsd, doesn't matter how fun and unique the game is, people will simply turn away because of it's apperance and approach

I'd still consider it a common misconception(without proper statistics), graphical appearance of a game is different as well & not related.
Not playing Morrowind because Skyrim looks better, is fine (Somewhat, understandable, a little, like the tiniest bit), but no one stopped playing WoW because it looked childish did they? Yes there are people out there that do but it's a very SMALL % that do hence why WoW got 11-12m users, and LoL has 30~ million users.

You are derailing into a totally different subject entirely lol.

Outfits of a character in a game that looks like crap, which you're already playing on the other hand, is a totally difference scenario is it not? If you're judging the server you have entered of a game, you virtually know everything about why the fuck are you leaving due to character appearance? You're clearly on the OT for more than character appearance, otherwise you'd still be on RLtibia.

- Back to what you brought up.
Katamari Damacy was popular as well, looked like crap, heck we'll go one further, Darwinia was a neat little game, was put on a lot of magazines got decent publicity & was quite popular, have a gander at the appearance of it.

A game, not being played purely because of it's graphical appearance is a misconception, i don't believe the majority of the gaming race are that dense, come off it..

Go read any forum discussion about LoL and HoN/Dota from a year or two ago, and you will see how dense people are

Katamari Damacy doesn't look like crap, it has a different art style, it looks great for it's art style. It has done well as a quirky game, but it is far from being popular, and on a ventrilo where I have talked to about 40+ people about the game, none of them would play it because of it looks, and the music. So take that test studyfor whatever you feel it's worth

There is a difference between something looking good and having "high graphics". A game can look good and appealing and not be on par with Far Cry 3 as far as high res goes. Something being appealing has nothing to do with high res or not.

As far as WoW goes, I looked at it and said "GAY" many years ago based fully on how it looks, I hate the art style, so I didn't play.

But back to the point, people do care about how things look like. If I made a super awesome game, but you have to run around playing as Salior Moon, there will be a lot less guys playing that compared to Black Ops or whatever Super Marine game is out right now. They could actually have the same exact game play, but the one were you look like Salior Moon will sell less.

If the game was situated round Sailor Moon then the chances are you would make a pretty good profit & it would become popular in the circles that like Sailor Moon, do you really think people think like you do?

Or do you think that because 100 or so complain about how the graphics look on a certain game that the other 1000, automatically get put into the category?

Katamari Damacy was popular, it's obviously not going to sell as many as JAK & DEXTER or GTA because it doesn't appeal to that audiance, but for those that it does, there was a huge audience following it that bought & enjoyed the game.
Who cares about the dumb 40 that didn't buy it, when 200,000~ copies were sold, for a niche game like that from Japan, that wasn't priced at full price, that isn't bad.

When this game came out, you saw it everywhere as well, don't tell me it wasn't popular.

We're also ruining Flatlander thread & i apologize for that.

Don't judge a book by it's cover.
