So you are working on a new project (new AAC, otservlist, OT, tool, game, etc) and want to show it off, what are the options? only one, you create a thread at discussion board and see it vanishes along lots of other threads that have nothing to do with a project showoff...

We have mapping showoff, spriting showoff, but we have no suitable/dedicated place to a full project showoff, and that is what I'm suggesting...

it has been tried two times:

but no success/answer...

The most enforced rules would be:
  • no advertising if it is an OT
  • no direct/indirect product selling

if you like/dislike this idea:

This is a great idea! People should comment and show their support if they like the idea, so it keeps the awareness and the thread raised for everyone to pay attention!

So yeah, if you are one of the ones who up'd this idea, lets get with it forreal and post some comments showing your support!

I freaking love the idea :D

Would be useful if properly moderated. Perhaps require moderator approval? We don’t want it being used or “abused” as an advertising section.

In all honesty, I’m not a fan of the rule that you can only post an advertisement of your project seven days before launch because many of us have been working on projects for months or even years, and I would even be tempted to use this as a means to do so.

Regards,

+1, or remove the limit for when you can post server advertisements. This will also limit project sharing to only tibia servers and staff will not have to worry about new forums/fan sites being cross advertised.

Just a friendly bump to get the attention back up on this one!

I really hope the admins are soon going to take care of feedback, needs and wishes.
Sadly, it seems that they could not care less.

First they said topics did not get enough votes to be rolled out but even topics with enough votes got repeatingly ignored.
Great suggestion with little effort to be implemented!

Thats exactly one of the major problems on this forum that's being ignored

The problem is essentially.

1) The board would be flooded by projects and moderators would have to spend time going through them.

2) The board would require mod approval which would create another Burdon on the mods.

The first problem will happen no matter what. Unless there are harsh rules on what is considered an "actual project" which would just create headache from all of the hotheads of Otland then add the fact mods have to sit and go through all of them.

Why though?
Wouldn't it be easier or simpler to just make a cooldown on repeat thread creations? Can only post a "new" thread once every month or so? That way people would be forced to keep their "current' thread the one that is active, instead of trying to post a new one each day to stay at top of list. Then, from there, there shouldn't be much more overhead, at least not any more than running a forum has already.

That is already not allowed anywhere and is still happening from time to time, regardless of whether we add a board or not.

Not a feature of XenForo unfortunately.

I have considered removing the "7 day rule" from Server Gala, which seems to be the easiest choice.
However, it proves to be the best rule against low quality ads that are being posted by new accounts/people who do not care to read any rules and post their half-assed topic on every forum related to OT.

Right now, the only issue with using "Discussion" is that it is mixed with other discussions, right?
The other complaint I see is that there are other "showoff" boards. There are problems with them as well, many times Sprite/Mapping show-off boards are used for pseudo-advertisements. While it's okay to be proud of what you are able to do, even the term "show-off" does not lie well with the spirit of what Otland should be, which is sharing and learning.

Now, creating a separate "Project Showoff" board is going to attract pseudo-advertisers, servers that launch in "many months" but never launch and cause further confusion between what should be an ad (server gala) or what should be a "show off". You can't really show off a server/project without advertising it, not unless it's not running at all. What if the server then starts? We'd have to delete the thread from show-off, because now it's an ad.

This suggestion is sitting here because there is no clearly good solution.

This may be worth a shot. Removing the "Only 7 days before launch" advertisement rule will at least prevent the forum from being cluttered with multiple threads about the same project. With proper moderation, it will be manageable.

I vote for this.

not unless it's not running at all.

This would totally be me, and it was the mindset I was in when thinking about this topic. I have had a "project" going for many years, never have I even came close to setting a launch date, but it would be nice to show off some of the things I had accomplished, just in case I never do get it up and ready for public play.

@Don Daniello you mention that other forums have "show-off" sub-sections, and that it can sometimes be a problem for people who are sneaking in advertising, well what if we follow that same model and make a "Feature Show-off", a section dedicated to just showing off what one has created, be it a source edit required, just a massive amount of scripts to make the feature, or perhaps even something in the client that was added. People could just show off stuff they have made, that isn't a map or sprite. 🤷‍♂️
Just an idea, its not much better than the ideas before hand, but perhaps its something to consider, and yes it would take work from the moderators to make sure the rules are followed just like the rest of the forum, but hopefully not that much more.

That's precisely the problem here - majority of those people are showing off in hopes of someone contacting them to purchase those edits, even if they don't overtly advertise that. We are consistently against that.

On the other hand, you can totally show off your source edits, scripts, etc in the Downloads section when you share it - this is most appreciated.

So that leaves us with the last category - show off, not sell and not share. I think it's a relatively minor use case and while I totally understand not everyone wants to share their code for others to use, this show-off has never been a focus here.

I'll think about it more, since we already have Show-offs for some purposes, so either we get rid of all of them or I should add another one.

Maybe you're going about this the wrong way. Maybe what we need isn't a project showoff board. Maybe what is needed is simply a dedicated section for people to discuss their plans and planned projects. Not so much a showoff, but a platform where you can throw up wild, silly, stupid and amazing ideas, and get feedback and thoughts on them. And maybe post updates if you happen to actually go through with them.

(Then again I don't know if that wasn't the original intention of the Discussion section)

However I do agree the showoff sections have gotten a bit... "toxic" when it comes to people abusing it. It's less of a "I made these cool things" and more of a "Look at what I can do. Hire me pls".

As someone who used to hang out on art sites (and still get linked to art accounts on twitter a whole lot), there's a definite difference between those artists and the people here. The former being much more interested in feedback and likes (but yes also commissions), meanwhile what we have here is people who are clearly either hoping to be picked up by a server, or are clearly hinting towards a "server in the making".

But that doesn't mean we should remove them. Maybe give them a clean and instate some new rules, like if you show off a map you must include the OTBM. Or if it's sprites they need to be in a usable format, not covered in watermarks or in other ways occluded. Or if it's website design, you should include a zip with the CSS/Assets.

Basically "If you're gonna eat candy in class, you better bring enough for everyone".
For everything else there's MasterCard the Jobs forum.

i agree with this
the spriting show-off board wasn't needed either. it already had a subforum which is now dead and only opened because mapping suddenly got theirs.
these seperate show-off sections on the front page make the site look more like a market place. it's like putting sales in front of the window to a shop. adding a new one for projects is definitely going to be abused.
maybe it was better before idk
