ON THE HIGH SEAS
Sailing Mode
Christopher sails on various ships from shore to shore, accompanied by the sounds of the sea and the sounds of his crew, as well as the musical score and even some traditional sailors’ songs. He starts out relatively low on the pirate totem pole – a smuggler and hired mercenary with a ship as unreliable as the moral restraint of its crew – but he can eventually come into possession of other ships, from small and swift vessels to a giant galleon, the ideal warship.
Ship Upgrades
Ships can be upgraded in a number of ways – better masts, sails, rigging and rudders improve a vessel’s maneuverability and speed, while its hull can be strengthened for greater durability. You can also arrange the ship’s weapons according to your own preferences.
Ship Customization
Not only can you repair and upgrade your ships – you can customize them however your want. Have hand-sculpted figureheads installed, or hoist all kinds of flags: national flags representing the different European powers present in the Caribbean, and several pirate designs including historically accurate variants of the infamous Jolly Roger. You can also raise sails in different colors and paint your hull in a variety of ways.
The Crew
“Send in the archers.”
“I beg pardon, sire. Won't we hit our own troops?”
“Yes... but we'll hit theirs as well. We have reserves.”
This well-known movie quote is a perfect illustration of Christopher’s attitude towards others. Men do cost money, however, and hiring them, keeping them fed, and paying them their monthly wages can be a real investment. Men can also gain experience, and experienced men will better serve Christopher’s ends than inexperienced ones. Only an experienced crew can look death right in the eye and still keep while firing and reloading the cannons. Such men don’t come cheap. Successful captains know their crew’s worth, when to risk them, and when to keep them alive for another battle.
Experience: While crewmen are a dime a dozen in the Caribbean, a crew that sticks together for a long time work better as a team. Experienced crews reload the cannons reloaded faster hit their targets with greater accuracy. Keeping the crew alive is a high priority for a captain that wants to turn his ship into well-oiled floating war machine. Christopher’s men bear the brunt of his successes and failures on the high seas, and only by keeping a good crew together can he hope to stand a chance against his enemies.
Morale: Just as important as a crew’s experience is their morale. A whip-cracking tyrant who would not balk at the chance to throw his men to the sharks is someone whose men only follow him out of fear. A thoughtful leader who knows how to appreciate their effort even has he maintains discipline with a firm hand – that’s someone men follow out of respect. Any captain who wants his crew to follow him to the very brink of hell itself is going to have to earn their respect first.
Recruiting: An unhappy crew is a mutinous crew, and a good leader knows to keep an eye on the needs of his men. A whip-cracking tyrant who wouldn’t balk at the chance to sacrifice his crew for the slightest reason is someone they’ll fear, but not respect. Discipline is important, but few men will follow orders when their monthly pay comes up short. Christopher’s success at sea is indispensably linked to the morale of his crew; men with full bellies and money in their pockets will follow their captain to the gates of hell if he asks them to, but if they’re hungry and underpaid, they’ll send him there without them. As always, the player can choose to walk this tightrope or throw caution to the wind, but a captain without a plan will soon find himself in command of an empty ship.
