Requirements to build an OTserver

So if you have average programming experience with C# and would like to try to build an OTserver for fun. What would you need to know before starting? What are the basic buildingblocks?

As far as I can imagine a good start would be knowing socket programming, being able to build a client, and game server that people can connect through to get online on the client but what else? Its my first attempt ever and it would be useful to know how to study this or where to learn how to do this on my own in general. Is there any good forum?
