Swtiching to Linux

I'm thinking about either switching to Linux from XP, or at least partitioning my HD to test out Linux before I switch. I'm more than likely going to host a server, so which kernel do you think I should try out. I know of Debian, Ubuntu, and Knoppix, but I would rather get a professional opinion on it.

For a server I would recommend Debian (without a desktop environment). If you don't have any Linux experiences and you want to use a desktop environment I would recommend Ubuntu (it's based on Debian, but it's more userfriendly).
