I am not here to name names, this is not about a specific time or place.

My suggestion is to crack down harder on trolls. We all know what they are, we all know WHO they are. Immature, negative, and otherwise just trying to cause problems should receive infractions.

I see some implication of this but I do not think it is thorough enough. I am not sure if this is a valid suggestion, I am just asking you heighten the posting standards. Or, if that sounds unfair, give out warnings more frequently to certain members who do this all the time.

I mean, honestly. Pointlessly harsh posts by the same names show up over and over again. I think the main reason that they aren't punished is because they are 'on topic' and even if they are we should set a certain standard for civility no?

Feel free to give feedback.

depends, if you get infraation for jokes its gone too far. but I don't mind harsher punishment on harassment etc

This is the way I punish trolls:

If I find the troll, I check his/her history of infractions and determine if the user deserves to be warned or infracted, but if you find the troll and report him/her, the punishment will most of the times be an infraction, 'cuz is affecting another user (you (in case you reported the post)).

So I recommend you to report every single troll in this forum, and I assure you we will take care of that.

Logic Trolls get away with Logical Trolling. Unexperianced Trolls get warned and/or Infracted / Banned.

The lulzworthy trolls usually have a higher chance of getting away with their shenanigans while the unlulzworthy trolls get the wrath of the goblin mods

etc.

How to identify a Troll
Most people who identify as a troll are, unsurprisingly, 12 year old kids with nothing of value to contribute, people angered by a ban, or users upset that no one pays attention to them. As expected, the only harm they do is make themselves look like idiots. Typically their posts are overly abusive, conspicuous and badly written. The topics are generally well known to be abused by Trolls and the poster would never be able to pass for genuinely interested in their question because of it. A good troll on the other hand is usually extremely difficult to out: knowing what they’re doing, they are able to bluff through a whole argument, giving the impression that they’re truly interested in the topic while watching the whole community go down on the thread in a mass of flame wars, ad hominem attacks and much generally much anger.

Example of a lulzworthy? and Logical trolling:

Damn, was hoping to finish my third post edit before you could quote and post. I knew you would because I am just that interesting and need to be quoted.

My Edit:

Different kinds of Troll

Inside the mind of a troll
Most people calling themselves trolls tend to focus on a single medium, be it youtube, online video games, forums or IRC.

  1. Hater
Almost exclusively used on Youtube, a hater (Or h8r) is a troll who searches for USI vloggers, cry babies or influenceable kids and picks out the logical fallacies in their political vlog, calls out overly dramatic attention whores on their obvious flaws, and ridicules kids on their lack of understanding of the "real world"
An impressive amount of user videos consists of people complaining about haters.
  2. Griefer
As the haters are on youtube, the griefers are present in most video games. Spamming the in-game chat window, role-breaking, teamkilling, camping, spawnkilling, and hacking are some of the prefered means of trolling a online gaming community.
  3. Troll for a day
When a board suffers from group think and stagnation, sometimes one poster will create a new account and log in to tweak the other posters into a flame war. The Troll for a Day will announce they are a TFAD (TFADing) and everyone will congratulate the regular after getting over their murderous impulses for bring the community back to life. Some argue that TFADing is a valid tactic for a board administrator to respark interest in a community and should be applied when the situation requires it as long as all suspecting members are silenced in a swift fashion.
Posters on message boards who have experienced this behavior will immediately try to label all newcomers as "TFADs".
