Why does it matter? Most countries are changing the name to soccer, since football is commonly referred to rugby. South Africa is the latest country to change the name to soccer.
Also, NO, the Americans did NOT come up with the word soccer. England did, back in 1800s, when you say football, people think of rugby, when you think of association football then it's association football, but since the name is long, people in England took parts of association and came up with soccer. It's been a popular name in the english language ever since.


Anyways, the name football (American football) has been familiarized in the public and it all traced back to rugby football. Since the American football is almost similar, the name football has been used ever since.

Again, the team I support the most are the Detroit Lions.
If it was soccer, then I would support my childhood team that no longer exists, Detroit Rockers.
