Gunna get so much flak for this. I hope some can understand, many wont.
I've been fairly active here on otland for 7 years now. Before that otfans. So i think I have somewhat an educated opinion from a developer point of view. Like many developers, i've made mistakes, i've fucked up, but through all the grit, I like to think i've made a pretty cool project for many to enjoy. Yea sure it's not the best custom server ever. But it is extremely actively played, multiple now top guilds of 20+ battling it out for the top team, guild tournaments of 8+ teams entering. As a server otservlist connections we range from 125-250 depending on the time of day. But anyways lets take a look at the custom servers of otservlist right now. (Taken at 12:00 PST on a weekday)
This is missing the first 11 servers (all also real maps)
This is to show the current amount of non-rl map servers in top 11 + 29 - 40 servers on otservlist.
In the top 40 servers, 3 are non-rl maps.
Now i've discussed this before... regarding the small - insanely small - minority otland is in terms of players. I did a poll on my website to see really how many. Of 218 votes, 104 said from otservlist, 110 referral from friends, 4 from otland. Otland is a home for developers. It's where we come to share ideas, discuss ideas, or find others to collaborate with, whether that is for free or paid. I have noticed that attributes alot of animosity on the forum however. Ignoring the fact that 95% of custom servers never release or they release for a week and are dead cause the developer quits/has rl obligations/gets bored and peaces. My thread here on this forum seems to be a cesspool for angry developers who are too lazy to finish their project or launch it/beta it and it gets torn to shreds by people or no one plays at all in the worst case. For the amount of shit other developers say, I like to think Archlight is doing fairly well. Now i'd like to explain why despite how "shitty" the project is.
The #1 reason players say they play Archlight is due to CONSTANT developement. Yes. I do Archlight full time as my full time Income along with naturopathic med school. I work 60-65 hours whether that is mapping, testing things, adjusting scripts, or simply responding to the copious amounts of emails from players (I allow any player to contact me via email with garanteed <8 hour response to any email) and facebook page messages/posts). This is important to players, and it's a huge reason many donate.
Another big piece of flak I find is people getting FURIOUS that I run Archlight as a business, and I pay others who are more skilled than me in certain areas (Mapping - Shirako/Alvary/Chromer/Lasttouch) (Scripting - Ninja/Alw) (Other random support - Halfaway) All who are fuckin geniouses in their work. These guys blow me away on their knowledge and expertise and thus I pay them for everything they do. They deserve it. I dont run a charity, I run a business, and I pay them accordingly. What I find hilarious is people get mad at me for this. They get mad that I run a Custom OT Project that allows me to eat/pay rent and then pay the rest to have large amounts of content added to the server every 3-4 days. Since when did paying people to do work become a crime? I get developers that have told me "It's so gay how you really dont do any scripting yourself, you just pay someone else to script/map" As that is for the most part true, when did it become a bad thing to pay someone to do their hobby? I pay 7 people on this forum a wage to do what they enjoy.. in one of there cases he now makes enough doing Archlight mapping to not wash dishes after school and instead map for 10 hours a week.
Regarding developer hate. I have noticed that there is alot of constant "sinistering" I guess is the word for it, following my thread and everytime someone says something bad about the server they jump and circle jerk it/call out more reasons why they think Archlight sucks. Go finish ur own fuckin project. I've noticed almost all of them either launched servers in beta that got awful feedback, or they dont even finish their project cause they're too lazy / they say busy yet they constantly have time to talk shit on a forum so iunno. The thing is, there is a massive difference between constructive criticism and flaming. Something @Flatlander does extremely well is he always does it in a constructive way. He is experienced in running projects, and knows his shit, and presents it in such a way.
Surprisingly the other large amount of hate I receive on this forum is from people who dont even play anymore, or people who were level 200 in 1.0 and still circle jerk each other on my thread to feel accepted somewhere. Even when we make new ways to close the gap between non-donors and donors these kids who dont even play anymore will scream OMFG NOT GOOD ENOUGH FUCK YOU BURN - paraphrasing of course, but that's their spew in a nutshell. Hey kid, this is my project, if you dont like it, dont play. We have our prices and content a certain way as it allows me to Actively develope this, actively support players, actively respond to people's problems, and pay multiple others to help create content so this project doesnt die after 3 weeks like many projects. Im sorry I run this like a business and not like a hobby like many of you. It started as a hobby, but to keep it popular, growing, expanding, I had to treat it like a business.
As much as I fuckin hate some people like @Codex NG and a few others that are probably fairly obvious, I will admit the community does benefit from them (at most times), yea sometimes they say things pretty poorly, or lash out, but in complete humility, I will admit they know their shit, and part of the reason they probably lash out is that they cant understand how fuckin dumb some people are when it comes to coding (such as myself). You see the same in other communities, I coach football, and when a new runningback simply cant hold onto the ball it makes me want to scream and say omg how cant you hold onto the fuckin ball, but I cant do that cause i'd very quickly be fired and shunned by the community, it's harder to control yourself when you have a screen + forum to scream on because there are almost no real life repercussions of your reaction. This also applies to the way I have responded many times. My point of this section is, as much as I hate some of you guys, you guys are fuckin smart when it comes to coding/computers, and many are fuckin stupid, remember that, patience is an amazing virtue and although it can be hard when you may be on a higher intelligence level in some things, its still an amazing virtue. Ninja or Halfaway here are prime examples of that, and im sure there are several more, despite how much shit they know, they are so calm and collected when a retard like myself asks 150 questions about something that is common sense to them.
No this isn't me saying "goodbye otland, i will enjoy the otservlist ethers from now on" - Something many developers do as they also found many reasons to avoid otland except saying the "Bump" every 24 hours. I find that most say "GOODBYE" its cause they simply want some attention. Nor would I leave, otland has so many amazing people, who do amazing shit @Damon or @Gaal are prime examples. And I enjoy seeing what people are doing etc, and i try to give back as much as I can by providing simple scripts I already have to people (usually I just do this via PM) or do photoshop stuff for people quick for free as I have all the tools to do it. The point of this post is to simply say, if you're a developer and you spend ur evenings circle jerking hate on my thread, go finish ur fuckin project and have 20x players than me like you allude to non-stop in my thread.
If you're a player who has an actual criticism with an actual suggestion, post it on our forums, abaddon reads that thing 3 times a day and responds to almost every thread, anything good he sends straight to me on skype (usually a few ideas a day), dont post ur criticism here as we rarely check here other than to post patch notes/updates. If ur just on the thread to circle jerk other haters who wish it was a lowrate server or had less in the shop, then continue, but I wont be responding to people anymore on it, it's too draining and pointless.
Brilliant minds on otland. Keep doing what ur doing. Ur fuckin savages and such a blessing to this community that you stick around.
