Let me start by saying that mapping really intrigues me, it's not one of my most favourite things to do just because I'm a newbie but when I'm mapping it feels like I don't have to worry about anything else.

I've tried doing a few little towns and such and it looks like they always turn out horribly. It seems that I can make shapes of Islands but that's all I've managed to do thus far XD.

I would be extremely grateful if someone was kind enough to provide me with some tips to get started (I already map in RAW so in my eyes I'm not a total failure anymore ^^) or some examples of shapes I could try filling in!

Thanks in advance!

Edit: If a moderator could move this to http://otland.net/f16/ it would be greatly appreciated!

Make a 7.6 server because dnwalcker, evolutions etc doesnt also got the best map and because there are lesser ugly new sprites and lesser chance to a random detailed map (didn't saw your maps) but those maps are awesome and are squary and not the msot detailed. And when you get better and such thing you could even advance to higher client and become better?

You can take a look on here: http://otland.net/f57/siramixs-mapping-archives-2011-a-115383/

Siramix is a good mapper :)

Thanks Sweddy, I've actually already taken a look at Siramix's mapping archives but simple eye-candy doesn't exactly help me. To me it's like seeing a completed math problem where half the work was done in their head; sure I know he started with borders (as per his Mapping School thread) and that he gradually built up but I have no idea how the "gradually built up" phase looks or works.

Do you really think starting at a lower map would be beneficial? Sure there are less options to choose from but I think some of the greatest advancements in graphics were between then and now. :/

Yes because i see alot of maps nowdays with rme and ugly NEW sprites or more items getting used wrong because there are much more items to use..
and 7.6 maps were good and also awesome and good playable even if they arent the best and squary but i is atleast not overspammed or fucked up on 7.6 map isnt that important and it still rocks then even if you are a bad mapper it could be a good map. I started on 7.5 and look at my project how my maps are now..
