Is there any market for a map editor with randomization built in?

Basically I have an easy semester and won't be doing any school projects, I was wondering if anyone was interested in buying (~$40 / 3 computers) a map editor that could do a lot of randomization features for you

Randomization as in continent shapes, cave layouts, houses, maybe cities
I plan on getting pretty intricate with the algorithms so that it will even decorate the stuff if you want it to
The editor would also have all the basic map editing features including auto border (small scale) and doodads

Assuming It gets completed and works as intended, what do you guys think?

I added in RME style borders, you can now use both interchange ably... I did this because small 'streams' are impossible to create using a cornered grid system that the tight border uses

Considering the fact that we have one map editor that's public available and three other editors that are under construction (maybe kind of stuck but still) I doubt you'd get that many sales (I bet some people would still buy it because of randomization features - however you just threw up your idea, someone might just make a standalone generator now :p).

Yea i know there's a couple map editors our there, and that's why I'm obviously trying to add stuff theirs cannot do.. I guess my plan is to try to upstage them on some of the features
And to judge the interest is part of the reason i made this thread

Edit Can only have 1 video per post so using this one too

Basic Map Algorithm Generator:

Code:
Gen.Cities ( Random Amount ) -> Select three different types of cities (marble, wooden, stone, etc...)
Cities -> Random select wether continent or islands
Cities -> Randomly generate NPCs with different personalities, outfits
Cities -> Randomly generate nearby hunting grounds
Cities -> Randomly generate NPCs offer items found in their nearby hunting grounds
Caves -> Randomly generate swamp areas
Caves -> Randomly generate quest items
Caves -> Randomly connect quest items between one or more caves
Caves -> Randomly decorate caves
Caves -> Randomly generate extra undergrounds, hidden spots
Caves -> Randomly generate cathedrals
Islands -> Randomly generate islands wether with mountains or not
Islands -> Randomly generate small towns with a desired destiny

Main Algorithm {
   NPC Types (Tools, Runes, Merchant, Monk, Guild Masters, Alchemists, etc...)
   Mountain Types (Generate a list of avaible mountains with a radius environment)
   Island Types (Generate a list containing algorithms for types of Fauna)
   Towns (Generate a list of missions, quests to be done)
}

Diablo ALike Algorithm {
    NPCs are always the same, including quests and missions.
    Generate a town with the things above, and randomly generate undergrounds, towers, islands containing the desired key to complete the quest.
}

P.S: If you read it all, yes i'm drunk happy 25th.

Looks awesome, merry Christmas bro! Happy drinking

Started development, but would still like to know if there is interest.. Bump

To try and spur some more responses I added a picture of about a week and half of development.. pretty disappointed in the responses in this thread, not sure if people just aren't interested at all, think it will be vaporware, or whatever

Please comment and vote, negative or positive its all feedback and appreciated.. there are 150 views and almost no comments

It might be fun to try whenever you can, but the quality of it will lack severely since it's still computer-generated, not unique. Might be sufficient for less-map-based servers (generating spawns w/e), but there it ends.

I'd never buy it, tho. It stimulates the way OT transforms to a money-based thing, and this is why I hope you do not succeed if it's pay-to-get.

Its not supposed to be used to replace mapping my idea is for it to be used together.. have it generate a cave with a certain template then go in and add/remove details, and add some unique stuff and quests
I think it would allow a mapper to spend more time on quests and detail than smaller things, but to each his own

Yea I don't blame you at all, I would be in the same boat and I'm sure a good bit of people are.. However as you obviously know doing this stuff takes time and you can say what you want about me / my motives, but I would like some compensation if possible..

The way i look at it is 90% of servers are created with the hope of turning a 'profit' off them with donations.. And its more those people that I think would be willing to buy a map editor because its just a chunk of their donations

I hope you do not succeed if it's pay-to-get.
This part doesn't make sense to me.. Because If i do succeed and it has features yours/remeres/fallen's doesn't, thats good for the whole community, because more than likely those features that were successful will eventually get implemented in the free editors

You don't have to agree with any of this, just my views... Good luck on your editor, your lighting system looks impressive :)

Well, good luck with it anyway.
The idea sounds nice and is usable in a certain way (forests generating w/e), but the pay-to-get thing still doesn't sound good in my eyes.

I'm fairly sure that someone will copy this idea soon enough, especially once a decent map editor turns out open-source. (Sadly RME is closed-source now, and Fallen's is just too incomplete to be used for anything.) - or stand-alone.

Thanks, I hope it does get copied, that's how tools grow.

And to be honest the fact that mine will be closed might fuel development even more.. I think motivation to beat a paid product is greater than motivation to have features that another free product has. Atleast I would be more motivated.. And if my unique features all get copied then i would have more motivation to add more in which in turn would be copied again.. a never ending cycle building upon each other

I'm not entirely sure what you're after now. You want sales and meanwhile you want others to make the same as you do, so you don't get sales?

Its not that I want that.. its just thats how development cycles between programs usually go, and it ends up being good for both which is what i would want... just look at how much windows copies from mac and vice versa.. you can say what you want about either OS.. but you can't deny that the competition isn't good for the market

Did some work on the auto bordering..

Obviously still early views.. this is a days coding on the bordering.. I like the results so far, what do you guys think?

It would be better to see it working with grounds, not just grass border.

Keep us up-to-date. Depending on how well it generates caves and how useful it can be to me I would consider paying for it.
Simply, because I'm not creative and starting new areas is the hardest thing for me. So if I could have it generated and then map all the details/make it work how I'd like it would make this tool invaluable.

I'm just interested in seen a map editor work like a real map editor, I'm not interested in mapping though I use 7.7 real maps :p
