Most of the people I've met on OtLand are generally from mapping showoff.
I've only met 1 OtLander in Real life (BeniS), and I met him on here because we were both from New Zealand.
Overall it definitely depends on location, language, interests.

Yh after a lil bit when you're known you will be talking to and with other members more.. Though, no one is more than a vm/pm away ^^.

Maybe join in chitchat abit - like forum games, etc and people will get to know u more "ish" xD
An easy way is to play an ot that the members seem to play, get to know them ingame, party hunt etc..
That kinda sparked a few for me when i joined witg the secura lifethread - tho i already knew a few members playing there.

Just find an area you'd like to be involved in and your contribution/involvement will be recognised

I'm currently looking for a server that Others play but I hate Real maps... and that's all I see anyone play.. I really don't like Real map, War or RPG.. I just like the plain old TP's with millions of monsters/quests and Loads of fun and some pvp for the hell of it.

I'd like to have real enemies than fake friends. For example I have 26 "friends" on another tibia related website(called TNet, I could have more but I refused some noobish offers from ~30 posts/0 rep accounts) and 3 "friends" here and guess how many of them actually cares? I only found 4/29 people are meaning something more for me than profile entries in activity. If you want internet friends outside otland you may try with bronies(I wouldn't even mention that, but you reminded me of first mlp:fim episode). Not all of them are nice, but it's not hard to find any, they're surfing all over the internet
