Poll: What do you think of "custom" clients?

Considering what's in bold (below) in the thread's main post, would you use a custom client?

Hi again, I'm here to get some feedback on custom client use and why very few people use them.

There have been previous threads discussing custom clients, and most of them are full of complaints regarding viruses, keyloggers, and the inability to bot (because they blocked it). Let's assume, for the sake of this discussion, that there are no viruses, keyloggers, etc. and you can still bot - would it change your perspective on using a custom client? You're going to have to download a client either way.

Please vote and post! Thanks for taking the time to discuss this. Your feedback is appreciated.

I thought typically people played servers with custom clients because people couldn't bot as easily with them. I personally see no harm in custom clients and enjoy them rather than the original boring tibia client.

I've always liked custom client because they were something new and exciting. It also allows for custom sprites if the owner decides to implement them which is really nice. Some people think custom clients prevent botting, but it's not that hard to bypass it. Then again it all depends on how complicated the custom client is.

When I usually see a custom client I see it as the owner actually took the effort to create one which means they aren't lazy. But like you said lots of people don't enjoy custom clients because they have to download something, they are scared of viruses, and so on which is rather lame.

I think the best way to approach a custom client is to first use a regular client, and then after a while when you have a decent amount of dedicated players you switch to the custom client.

TL;DR
+1 for custom clients.

I really love custom clients, and as we can see from tibianic+classicus/pokemonots etc you can still get a huge amount of players with a custom client. However I strongly dislike otclient, maybe if someone could make it more like the regular client (with some improvements) it could become more popular.

For me as a player really depends on the advantages of the custom client, if you offer me a pokemon client with fucking awful sprites (like most servers) I won't even think about testing the server but if the custom client offers NEW things that CAN'T be done with the normal client, well, I'll take it.

As owner is almost the same as above, I won't offer a custom client if is not strictly necessary (worried about losing players).

Well really hard to say, but you can ofc do ALOT of great things with a custom client, BUT as a player I never use them mostly - depends on the reputation of the owner.
I would really like to give OTC a go, but since I would have to spend days cleaning up the code I feel that it's a waste of time, but could be really cool to make a server just like you want it to be.
One thing I normally do is still offer a "custom client" - ip, rsa etc changed so they don't have to use an ipchanger.

Thanks for all of the feedback.

It seems like most people don't mind if there's a "custom" client. I've been considering using one, not to block botting, but to have custom content. Not entirely sure if I want to start out with the custom client, though. As suggested above, I had planned to introduce custom content later on, which is what I may end up doing.

Please stop writing such a small text haha
Well as long as you include a virustotal scan(they will write the checksum), you write the checksum on the website you might get some more players, since if they care about getting the real software they will check the check the checksum.
Also ask yourself "do I really need a custom client?", then ask yourself "do I have enough reputation to be able to make a good OT where you are forced to use a custom client?".
If you think the statments are true, then do it - you can't lose anything more then time on it.

Okay, I'll write smaller. ;)

Anyway, with what I want to do, a custom client is the best way to go. And by "custom," I'm not referring to major changes on the client side. The main point is to avoid debugs in-game with new stuff. It will be very similar to the original client aside from a changed .DAT and .SPR file, and perhaps a new .PIC file for branding... But it seems sticking with the original client is the "safest" path to take. But a part of me loves taking risk, especially if said risk comes with great reward in the end.

I appreciate all of the feedback. You guys are awesome. This helps, and I can't be the only one benefiting from your feedback.

Well what you could do for a start (and I am in no way saying this is a good way to go...) is to do major changes to the source code, ex. if they are viewing a sign (custom made) send the sprite id of ex. a simple sign and the same goes for custom outfits / mounts etc.
You can in most cases do that, but it's not something you should feel is good - in any way xD
But it is a way to get started and make the players feel that they gain something by downloading the client - also tought of now(like some servers have done already) is to give out free points / extra exp etc to those who use the custom client.
