Word of advice:
I think that the first thing amateur mapper should learn is to completely kill bad habit of making enormous maps with a lot of empty spaces that looks monotonous.
If You’re not thinking about making server, then You don’t have to worry about “patency” of all streets, corners, bridges, caves and all of the other location. You can make everything smaller, concentered, dense, etc.

For fences to not go into walls like this:

Turn off autoborder and delete the piece that's on the wall that way the fence looks connected to it.
