Sprites by Saphron

Typical of bad upscaling, fine details and straight lines are smoothed and bent out of existence and it ends up looking like a bad oil painting usually not very noticeable unless zoomed in, seems these guys took it a bit too far lol. Personally I absolutely hate the end result of these sprites because I can't see past the absolutely ridiculous amount of smoothing and my brain struggles to understand why anyone would choose this usually unwanted effect as a style.
(to understand better take any low res image and upscale it using any online upscaler, then you have "medivia style")

The sprites before upscaling are straight 10/10 tho.

There is nothing of "typical bad upscaling" here as you assumed. The AI model was precisely created to smooth out all the lines and that was a design choice. I've seen several attempts on otland by using e.g. waifu2x and those to be honest are total crap because that network was never meant to upscale pixel art.

That being the case, we have created a lot of different AI networks and models in the past to choose a final concept, e.g.:

There is not enough data in 32x32 sprites to smooth out the lines by the artist himself, while it is more than obvious the artist meant for the necklace and spikes to be smooth and not sharped with stairs like edges.

That being said, we made it the way we wanted it to be ;)

I think your sprites look very clean and nice. It's obvious that it's your design choice, and the overall feel you get from the sprites is a sense of completeness. There doesn't seem to be many sprites that differ from the general design theme, and that's a big plus from me.
What I am curious about is if adding new detail-sprites such as gravel, stones, dirt etc on floors would fit your design or not. Perhaps it'll add some variation and asymmetry that will look nice, or perhaps it's just better as it is currently.

Playing Medivia for the first time now and I got very intimidated when I ran into a giant spider all of a sudden down in a tomb.

ye, use CRT monitor

if you'd read something about game you want to play, you would know there is an option that allows adding custom sprites, which can be more 'edgy'
 
I don't see how using a CRT monitor would help me changing the post processed sprites to the way they are before the processing.
I know there's sprite packs around and a Tibia 7.4 for medivia, I'm asking for a way to use Saphron sprites.

Thats the reason why HD was implemented in first place, so people wouldnt steal my artwork :)
