OtLand OtLand's update to vBulletin 4!

After months of planning and working, we have finally launched the update! There are still a lot of things to be fixed but I'll leave that for later.

So what is so special about this update?
The most important changes are the server move and the update to the new major version of vBulletin, 4. OtLand has been moved to a server colocated in Chicago, with a lot more powerful hardware than what our previous server had. We thank everyone that has donated to OtLand for making this possible.

The update to vBulletin 4 makes the forum more modern, using new technology for most of the stuff on the forum... but it has also brought us a new design. It might take a while to get used to it, and we expect to get complaints on it but we hope that you will describe how it can be improved. I would like to say thanks to Deavz, Chrsman and Hani for assistance with the styling, but most of the design credits should go to Holix.

We have also integrated a server list view which lists 10 random servers, and a subversion for projects supported by OtLand. Most of the plugins have been rewritten by me to fit OtLand as good as possible. The syntax highlighting plugin which only used to be available for Lua tags has been extended with C#, C++, Erlang, Javascript, Python, SQL and XML.

The forum structure has been revised. All the OpenTibia related stuff can be found below the OpenTibia category, such as resources and tutorials. A miscellaneous section has been added for support, and tutorials which aren't related to OpenTibia... and some other changes have been made.

The donators usergroup has been renamed to OtLand Premium which is a more suitable when we are providing benefits that most people who donate expect. This doesn't mean that OtLand becomes more commercial, the money received from premium subscriptions will still be seen as donations!

Everyones reputation points has been reset as we change the factors for reputation points with this update, we hope this doesn't bother you too much.

Kind regards,
OtLand Staff.

The reason why the reputation was reset is because it became too easy to gain reputation power, and with so high reputation power you can boost pretty much anyones reputation points. It would be unfair for new members if we just changed the factors for reputation power without also reset on the reputation points. If you deserved your reputation points, you shouldn't have any problems to get the same reputation again.

The CMS will most likely be up by tomorrow, we are currently working on the structure for it. We plan on having basic OpenTibia articles there for newbies. The News forum under OpenTibia is invisible now until we have fixed the RSS fetching and permissions. Hosted Project Boards can be found at the bottom of the forum under Misc. category. There are still a lot of stuff to be changed, PLEASE post what you dislike instead of posting "I don't like it, old style please". We are not going back in time, we will work further on this one until everyone is satisfied with it.

The subversion client support will be added back for at least the public subversion. Regarding the private subversion, it remains to see if we can connect it to the vBulletin auth system somehow for subversion clients.

By the way, the template is obviously based on the vBulletin 4 default, and to compare it with OTFans? They are still using default icons, their gradients are the same as vBulletin except for that they changed the colors on style variables. I'm pretty sure we put a lot more time into the update than they did, there was also a lot of back-end work involved in our update. We spent the entire night applying the update, there is really no way that we are going back. It will just take some time to get used to the new template, the old template wasn't really that nice, no where as good as this. It's just that you were used to it.

We migrated from -> to:
apache -> nginx
mysql -> percona
myisam tables -> innodb tables
vBulletin search engine -> sphinx
php -> php-fpm

The hardware on the new server is Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5520 @ 2.27GHz with 12GB RAM, our previous server had AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ with 4GB RAM.
