About dedicated servers

I would like to know how this works.
The servers hosts your OT but with its files or does it just portforward (or something with your ip) and makes it work, so if you edit something then it will work?
Or do you have to send files and stuff?

Your computer is not linked to the dedicated server in any way, turning it off or blowing it up will not affect the server
