As far as I can remember, no. However I did have a partner until Vol 3, Chapter 3 or so. Can't recall 100% if he was needed but I don't think he was. It's just more fun to be with someone

I started playing during the 7.0 client. The game is easy enough now as it is, no need for double experience too
