Hello,
I'm 19 years old and I have been interested in joining the Army since I was 16.
I've met a few people who used to be in the army (an old friend was too) hes alot older than me though. He was in a car out on patrol when an IED blew his car in Afganistan, 4 of his friends died, he survived and is now back out there, fighting.

I was just wondering if anyone else thought about signing up to their country?
If so, why didn't you sign up?

If you never wondered about joining the army, why don't you wanna go?

This thread isn't to "persuade" everyone into joining the army, it's just a thread for discussion about it.

Regards,
Beo.

I've thought about joining the US Marines because of all the benefits you get and because they are so damn good, the United States Army is a very popular destination for those outside the US who want to fight.
However, I have a goal in life already before even thinking about joining the Marines, so I will be going to college and fulfilling a professional career in the business world.

Here's a phrase to remember, "I'd rather die for something, than live for nothing.".

Lol, new zealand, army? airforce? navy? xD bitch please this year we got rid of our Iroquois helicopters... for our airforce, we don't have jets, we have a navy with SS Canterbury which breaksdown every few weeks. and our army ._.

I'll just leave this

Awesome feedback :)
@Evan, have you not regretted it? Like not going?
@PotatoSkin goodluck bro :)

@Sharp, too bad... Maybe you should join another country xD

Not really, (yet).
I'm still in college, haven't been out in the "real world" yet.

Beo, I AM joining the army as an officer. Once i finish college (a few weeks) i am going to take a gap year, get fit and then apply for sandhurst; which as you may know is the British Royal Military Academy. :)

I have always wanted to join, and tbh it fits my personality. (Maybe i have been brainwashed who knows :p)

Anyway:

Pros (the way in which i look at it)

The army (British Army) offers so much, you gain so many skills, qualifications and the experience is amazing. Live ops using tactics, rushing in against an enemy with a plan and executing it is such an adrenaline rush. Since a kid i have always been facinated with the army (and not because of guns and shooting "badguys", but because of the prestige that comes with it. The sense of pride, meaning and respect. It is like no other.

Cons:
Well, you may die. But i would happily give up my life for others. The way you look at it is that the benefits outweight the risks. You are risking your life so that others don't have to.

Killing another man is another question people ask. Although it is taking another's life, the way you must look at it is that you are potentially saving more. Don't be discouraged if you feel it is a path you want to join, since the british army wont select you unless you are what they are looking for.

I have a card that was given to me on a course that states the main principles a soldier must hold: Selfless commitment, Respect for others, Loyalty, Integrity, Discipline and Courage.

The military covenant states: "Soldiers will be called upon to make personal sacrafices - including the ultimate sacrafice - in the service of the nation. In putting the needs of the nation and the army before their own, they forego some of the rights enjoyed by those outside of the armed forces. In return, British Soldiers must be able to always expect fair treatment, to be values and respected as individuals, and that they (and their families) will be sustained and rewarded by commensurate terms and conditions of service."

I would go and see an Army career advisor and see what is best for you..

HOWEVER:

You have a kid now man, and i understand that your risk is greater than any other. I have always let my girlfriends know that i intend to join the armed forces and no matter what it is the path i will follow. They have come to accept it, but my brother is also a father now and he is ex army. He said everything has changed for him now, and although he wanted to join the French Foreign Legion, he just can't face that the risk of him dying will put his son without a dad. So i would schedule a meeting with an advisor and tell him your situation.

It all depends on the corps you intend to join; Intellegence, artillery, rifles, air assault, reconnicence(or w,e).

Hell, maybe if you join i will be your commanding officer :p haha.

And look into the TA also.

And if you look into officership, you need A-levels at passes (E+) LOL
And then you goto sandhurst and train doing a 44 week officer training course, split into 3 terms and you get to do riot training (which is awesome throwing fire bombs at eachother LOLOLOL)
You then commission (if you pass) as a 2nd LT. and if you are a graduate, you recieve guarenteed promotion and slight pay rise. After 5 years of service you are guarenteed to be a captain; something a regular soldier may take 25 Years to become.

I prefered USAF (United States Air Force) but my cuz is in the army and she says it's pretty good in there.

And DO NOT, as I was told by my grandfather, (who is ex-military vetran) go see a recruiter or any of the army without someone who is in or has been in the services. All recruiters and the 'counselors' really care about is getting paid and that's determined by how many they have recruited.

Do remember he is british and therefore can only join the british army. XD

Plus you can eat w,e you want in a HQ. Steak every night :D:D:D

Also come patrolling; ration packs are pretty good.. People trade also.

And they used to give you a yorkie bar with "it's not for civies" but it cost too much to keep doing it and lousy cuts (and i mean cuts, before you think i mispelled cunts-regarding the govt. :p) got rid of it to some "own brand" shitty chocolate bar. :P

And @walking, the recruiters in ENGLAND are completely different believe me!

They only are interested in you IF you meet their requirements.
The recruiters here generally are Retired Colnels, and they focus on how you will cope.

The British army also aren't recruiting really, they just laid off like 3000 soldiers etc, yet are recruiting for officers and territorial army (part time.)

Not necessarily, i know someone who moved from the netherlands to the us and got citizenship there just to join the navy.

I have been requested in to the air defense 2 times already. And I have agreed to participate with them after my studies. Who knows, I might be programming the next warfare simulator.

I don't wish to have too much responsibility, so I don't wish to be out in the battlefield. I have had enough friends dying on me already. I would turn completely crazy if I only would witness a small part of what real soldiers experience.

When the Humanity will know that war sucks, we aren different as a person but we worth equal...

Fuck life what is? A shit? 70 years? But there's no reason for die in a war, cuz war are the worst thing in the world, you maybe never know or see what happens there, and it's better to don't know it...

War will be with us for the rest of our lives, it even started when first man came on Earth, we all know its sad, but in the meantime, you're joining the forces just to protect your country.

Yeah the only thing that's holding me back is my girlfriend & my son.
I know I can apply for it up to the age of 35. So even if 10 years time I wanted to go, I could.

At first I was looking into intelligence, but then I started craving the frontline. Yes, craving.
I've seen people been stabbed before, I've held / seen guns, its not a nice thing to see, its inhumane imo.

Another reason I wanna go is because of the lack of jobs over here in the UK. Literally, the recession has had a tough hit & I don't have cash to pay for college, its pretty expensive.

Everytime I meet a guy in the army, I'm literally hypnotised by his stories, I can sit there and imagine myself doing it.
I've wanted to do it for so long but - my girlfriend and son.
I couldn't risk leaving my son for the world, same with my girlfriend.
They mean too much to me.

I just created the thread to see other peoples thoughts on joining the army etc.

I think patriotism is bullshit, one less reason to join the military. Aside from that, I wouldn't want to serve a corrupted ass Military whose military spending is greater than all top countries (military wise) united ( List of countries by military expenditures - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) that despite all that, still control the masses with fear... one led by crazy psychotic people ( Past => Operation Northwoods - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia | Present => iraq war: us soldier throws his medals and stars!!! and quits - YouTube ), nonetheless. I just can't believe there are still everyday normal people calling for more Military spending, as if it wasn't enough. ;_;

After a war, what is left? What have you won? Back in the days, it was justified. You would fight for independence, etc. But what do you fight for right now? ""Defending your nation"" is alright, but Policing the world around you just because you feel like it? Nope. That's what the U.N. was made for.
The only ones winning from all these senseless wars are the military contractors, and I'm not putting my life at stake for that. ;_;

If there happened to be a real treat, I wouldn't mind enlisting... but as it is right now, thanks but I think I'll pass.

#Edit:
wops, someone closed the thread already... my bad. lol
