avast

Free: Avast // Paid: ESET (NOD32 or Smart Security). I'm gonna do a test in a few weeks. I choose those two because they're the only ones that protect well and don't drain up the resources. I'm currently using ESET Smart Security 4 Business Edition. It protects well, but I have several problems with the firewall. Also, it seems like Avast has progressed a lot.

NOD32 is the only one that doesn't come close to being good.
Way back me and afew friends use to look into Keyloggers and trojans, one in perticular was Ardamax, which is actually a well known keylogger made by ardamax software similar to the popularity of PROrat etc, basically when we tried this one on afew anti-viruses, NOD32 was the only one that didn't pick it up, naturally one of our friends who praised NOD32 wasn't with us so he didn't see the results and we hacked him with it for shits and giggles (we removed it later ofcourse).

There are many Anti-viruses out there that claim to be the best, but they rarely are.
I use Avast but i wont say it's the "best" because i know it isn't it's just what i've used for so long because it's free, easy and has silent mode.
The best choice anyone can give you is to just pick one, because at the end of the day if you're downloading something that might have a virus in it, one of 2 things will happen, either
A: the person that put it there was a kid, and is useing something known such as Ardamax, in which case any anti-virus should pick it up,
or B: there is a undetectable virus in there that is going to get you either way (Don't tell me there arn't any, there is).

Use Sandboxie if you're unsure of something, or Avast which has a Sandbox built in. If you're really un-sure and would prefer to be safe? Don't download it.

Or use virutal machine to test nasty things :-)
There are alot fully undetectable viruses in the market which can't be detected by any of the antivirus software until you sent that virus to investigate it to the anti-virus company.

The problem here is that the best antivirus (based on the reports on those webpages) are all resources-eaters. I tested some of them some time ago and as soon as the installation finished my PC began lagging like hell. The reason I choose Avast and ESET for testing was because they're almost always at the top of those reports. And about the Ardamax, I remember the PCs in my school got infected with the Ardamax, but back in the time that virus was pretty new. Maybe (maybe!), ESET has already added protection though the updates?

avasta is alright but it uses to much of your cpu. its an unnecessarily big and a pain to get it to allow programs that are safe but get flagged like TFS.
AVG is alright
i like microsoft security essentials the best its very light weight and easy to use and listens to you when you tell it which files and programs are safe.

I usually don't trust Microsoft products but I've seen several positive comments about Microsoft Security Essentials. I think I'll be testing it too, although the thing that bugs me about it is that it uses the Windows Firewall, which it's one of the worst I've ever experienced.

I like my Norton 360 2011 the best. Doesn't cost much if you are 3 who shares the cost and you get 3 keys so.

I recoomend Eset Nod 32 . I have been using it for the past many years aand no problem since then but keep on upgrading it .

What if more peoples shares the same computer? I am talking about beginners. Anti virus is indispensable in that case.

About software itself: I've used Norton cause it was included as default software in my laptop, but its a pain to manage it cause it got very unclear interface and is missing some options.

I got good experiences with Kaspersky, it was very effective, got many options and wasn't so "noisy".

Didn't realize you're talking about free ones, take my post as an advice then incase you want something paid.

Want my humble opinion? Use common sense when browsing online(since you get viruses just by drive-by browsing) and you will be well protected(since most of the 99% of virus infections happen because the user does something wrong or stupid).

But if you want idiot proof Antivirus then use Linux(that is if your complete problem is that you download viruses).
