I am looking to obtain either a VPS or dedicated server. Im actually a reseller but I get one server free for my own use. So my big question is for a server using between 1 and 50 users to start, average map in about 30MB would VPS with at least 1GB ram work ok? Single core processor Intel Xeon E5620

What is the minimal ram one can use and run smoothly?

Hello,

it depends. If you're going to run SQL and a web server aswell you will need atleast 3 GB, even if you have a small map and a small amount of players. Since all other software also requires memory, not only your OTServ. Your OS will also depend on this, I doubt that Windows Server 2012 for example even will work with lower than 2GB memory.

But even if you only are going to run the OTServ itself I still recommend 2GB or more.

I hosted one server from a VPS but I had 4GB memory and 2-core processor, worked kinda good even if the OTServer took some time to start. As I said, kinda good but not perfect. And when I tried a dedicated one with less memory and a slower processor it was smoother than the VPS. Probably since a VPS is sharing hardware and network with others. So I recommend you to buy a dedicated one.

What do you think of dual core dedicated with 1GB RAM? It would seem that should do it, surely it wont require more than 1 GB RAM would it?

Are you running Linux or Windows? Are you using the same server for ex. Apache and MySQL? Then 2GB minimum, trust me mate.

Ok ill go with at least 2GB to start. I can always upgrade. I can go either linux or windows. Whats your opinions there?
I was also thinking of using the service offered on this forum, has anyone had good or bad experience there?

VPS w/ 3GB of ram running debian 64bit should keep you comfortable.
There is absolutely no need for anything more to run a server that size.

Rather than upgrading and paying more for the allocated physical resources, i'd direct my vps hunt to providers that offer DDOS mitigation. People are bastards.

I'm using DDG's hosting service. There have been some small issues latley but over the last 3 months I've used it I'm kinda pleased with it, you won't get anything better for that price, so depends on how much you're willing to pay.

Well I get that one server free but its only a 6 month period then its like 138 bucks after that.
Im not going to have any larger than 50 players at most I assume so i may use DDG. Does it run pretty smooth? with what kind of user load?

Would you reccomend linux or windows?

I've tested DDG's "lowest" Windows solution, with 3GB ram etc. Working really good with a 30mb~ map and 100~ players. Could be some memory problems when you're using some other software but 4GB memory will do the trick.

During those 3 months there have been two serious downtimes, one was because of a server freeze and it was down for 7 hours. The other one was because of a mother board failure so it was down for almost 24 hours. The last one must be a rare error so if you only count the first downtime it's a nice uptime for 3 months and that price.
