Check creatures

Is there anyway to check how many creatures of 1 kind in the server? to be more clear is I want this function for the boss summon. Use globalevent to summon a boss in an area after some tmie but I dont want it to summon 2 of them at a time. so if there is a function to check i can do like

if bossAmount < 1 then
     doSummonCreature(blablabal)
end
