You should not open port 3306, it's a security risk, because people can access the mysql server outside the local network.

Actually the only reason to open port 3306 is if you got login server and game server on different machines

Tho i would strongly suggest that a solution like that only opened the port to a static IP instead of everyone.
That solution would also remove some of the ddos kids since they just take the server IP and ddos (Takes down the login server but not the game server)
