I got the exact same problem this guy has:

I installed a program that is not compatible with Vista, and it fcked it up.

used Vista install disc to get it =) works now

If you want some valid reasons to upgrade from Windows Vista, I will list some below:

1. UAC has mellowed out
   
2. Explorer is no longer a pane in the behind (Not Internet Explorer because that is permafail)
   
3. Graphics cards coexist peacefully once more (Have an ATI and NVIDIA working at the same time!)
   
4. Clutter and bloat are reduced
   
5. Boot performance is better
   
6. Notifications can be fine-tuned
   
7. Security messages are consolidated
   
8. Side-by-side windows auto-size (Snap)
   
9. Home networking gets simple
   
10. Taskbar preview
