I'm not sure which will appear on top in-game, the archway or tent. I have been doing this recently for an area I am making and it is turning out stellar.

I haven't tested it, but archways have the flag of 3 always on top. Theoretically it should work. Also another idea if it hasn't been shown yet.
A wagon inside a tent wall to give the feeling that the items of an NPC are inside.

A tent for NPC sleeping quarters and storage.

Almost every hangable object will work - except for torches, wall lamps etc.. You can even make shop signs (the one with the armorer's sign).
