The Forgotten Server v1.0 requires at least gcc 4.6, which is available in Debian 7 (wheezy).
The Forgotten Server v1.1 requires at least gcc 4.8, which is available in Debian 8 (jessie).

Simply said you have already downloaded TFS, if you wish to update it you have to remove the direcotry "forgottenserver".
Also a tip is that you try to keep your OTs stuff in /home/server or something like that.

How do I install gcc 4.8 on Debian 7?

Just ignore the stuff about Raspberry Pi and start from where it says "We need to get gcc from the jessie repositories".
