Please do not namedrop moderators or something like that. This is thread is to discuss the attitude etc. a moderator should have and should not have, not current moderators on otland or any other site. So please refrain from doing so.

I thought it would be interesting seeing people's criteria for a good moderator. It seems to differ a lot between people. Some see a moderator as great until they receive an infraction or warning of some sort, even if it's completely justified.

What makes a good moderator in your eyes?
What are the "Do's & Don'ts"?

Do not have mixed opinions with certain members.
For example, you shouldn't be more strict towards Brazilian members than Swedish members.

Do not seek for rule violations, just go with the reported posts. Of course, the job is to remove bad posts.
But take it a little bit easy, don't be a prick.

Be active.

Those are some of the things I learned while being a moderator on OTFans.

A moderator must be objective when doing his job. If he is unable to be so in a situation then he should let another moderator handle the issue instead.

A moderator should talk with the other moderators as well, to keep himself updated and discuss things he's insecure about. Moderators usually have different interpretations of the rules, so discussing them can be good to make the work of the staff more consistent.

Even if the site has rules against just that?

He should be like:" Dude stop bumping". Not like: "You have been warned for bumping your thread under 24hours". Like a snoob!

I like this thread, let's see where it goes

@Jimmy
If we didn't cared about flaming/trolling, more then half of the population of OTLand would be gone by now as most of them don't like flamers/trolls and only flamers, trolls and newbs would be around

@FreshMapper
A warning is exactly what it sounds like, a warning.
The difference between simply posting "stop bumping" or giving an warning is that if the person keeps bumping other threads and another mod sees him, he knows(from his Warning List) that he has bumped threads before and will give either another warning or an infraction from his own judgement, while if we simply wrote on that thread, the person could be bumping threads all over and different mods would always simply say "don't bump" because there was no warning previously given

This is peoples views on what a good moderator should be. It was not an insult to moderators here or anywhere else, read the main post before you take offence.

I know that, which is why I said in the first line that I liked the thread, I am here talking as another user of this forum, not as a mod

and I did not take offense, I am just explaining why we do something in reply to what the other users said, although if you prefer that I don't post anything, fine by me :)
