Greetings!
For years, I've wanted to host my own classic Tibia server but always felt overwhelmed. Instead of putting it off any longer, I've decided to finally learn how everything works from the ground up!
Like many of you, Tibia 7.x/8.x was a huge part of my childhood. My goal isn't to create the next big OT server—it's to recreate the classic experience as faithfully as possible while learning how these projects actually work.
Goal:
I'd like to host a stable 7.x or 8.x server locally that stays as close to the original game as reasonably possible and realistic to achieve.Things that matter to me include:
• Authentic gameplay and mechanics.
• Original map, sprites, and client etc.
• Stability and maintainability.
• Understanding how the essential pieces fits together and works instead of simply getting it to run! This is just as important to me. It would also make this a way more meaningful resource for so many others.
My experience:
• Basic programming knowledge (Java, Python and C). From years ago• Comfortable reading and editing basic code.
• Made a simple 2D game in Python with terminal graphics
• No experience with OT development, databases and server hosting.
Current status:
I'm essentially starting from scratch.I haven't decided which distribution, client, or tools to use yet because there seem to be many different opinions, outdated guides, and abandoned projects. As a beginner, it's difficult to know which path still makes sense in 2026.
What I'm looking for:
I'm not looking for someone to build this for me.I'm looking for guidance from people who have already walked this path.
Questions like:
• Which distribution would you recommend today, and why?
• Which client version would you start with?
• What tools should I learn first?
• What are the biggest mistakes beginners make?
• Are there any guides or resources you still consider relevant?
Any advice—big or small—is genuinely appreciated.
Why make another thread?
I know there are already many discussions, tutorials, and AI tools available, and I absolutely intend to use them. However, a lot of the information is scattered across forum posts spanning many years, and it's difficult for a newcomer to know what is still relevant. My hope is that this thread becomes more than just another "help me" post!
If I manage to get a working setup, I'd like to document the entire process and turn it into an up-to-date beginner's guide that others can follow. Maybe we can even collect current best practices in one place instead of sending newcomers through years of old forum posts.
If you were me starting this project from scratch today. Where would you start and what roadmap would you follow? And just as important; why?
Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance to anyone willing to share their knowledge!
