The Deepwater Horizon oil spill is a massive ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that is now considered the largest offshore spill in U.S. history. This oil is owned by BP (British Petroleum) and they are responsible for spending their own money to clean up their own mess with the help of other countries. BP is experiencing a complete financial collapse. Some estimates placed it by late May or early June, 2010, as among the largest oil spills in the world with tens of millions of gallons spilled to date. The spill stems from a sea floor oil gusher that resulted from the April 20, 2010 Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion. The explosion killed 11 platform workers and injured 17 others.
With the hurricane season that flies over the Gulf of Mexico every August, people fear that it will create a widespread environmental disaster. Countries from all over the world are offering help; Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Iran, Ireland, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
Interesting fact:
- It is suspected that the oil is flowing at 35,000 to 60,000 barrels (1,500,000 to 2,500,000 US gallons; 5,600 to 9,500 cubic metres) of crude oil per day.
