Host server with Modem?

Hello guys, i've been retierd for a while and i thought i should host servers again, but the problem is that i have changed the router to a modem instead.
The question is.. Can i host a server with a modem or do i need a router?

Ofcourse you can host on a modem.
The router is only needed to connect several computers to the same network.

If it's a modern modem it'll probably have some sort of router in it.
