For this I'd suggest signing up with a company like Vultr.com with some free credit, and then have a play with some of their services for free.

For "going big" you'll probably want something with a little more ddos mitigation capacity than vultr currently offers. Your options there are limited, but you can contact me to discuss it further if you like. OVH is the company that otland users will generally recommend though.
