I need to know if there is some way to equip and unequip an item via code.

Short: Yes
Long: Need to know the version of TFS you are using. While it is possible to do in any version, it might only be possible in the new 1.x servers by default (and even then I'm not sure) will try here in a minute.
Edit:
After looking around it seems that you can only use item:moveTo for players/containers/tiles. Unless I've overlooked something, it would appear that in order to do this we will have to add the functionality ourselves.
