Learning how to photoshop

Taking my basic class of photoshop, next year ima take advanced one, heres our assigment: Restore the picture to make it look like a modern picture:

I know i failed with the skin color.. :S looks fake

It looks to me as if you're just black and whitening the original and then color overlaying with a brush :s?

pretyy much yeah.. thats all i know how to do atm, classes are every other day :/ and no class on weekends so my next class (hopefully learn something new) is on tuesday
