Does the map needs to be the same version, and is it possible to convert maps from versions?

It can be a lower version.
I'm not sure about a higher version, but maybe they are importable although a loss of new items would occur (I'm not sure at all about this, if it's possible).

As Colandus said, if you import a 10.x map to a 8.6 map you will lose all the items that isn't in that version.
If you go to a higher version everything will be OK.
The easiest way is to import the maps into a blank one and see if it works, that way if you lose half of your map you can still go back to a working map.
Also remember that they both have to use the same base OTB file, otherwise things like zao items might get bugged since there was a couple of 8.6 OTBs out there.
