You need to learn to use the raw palette, stop getting the map editor to do things for you.
Take a look at some other mappers threads, Neon, Mine, Illusions, Macedoon etc and look at how we detail our maps.
Try to make things not look too squary and think about the way/amount in which you use details.

Also definitely continue to use .PNG format and

tags
