Do you Know the attacker? Try to find out the IP, ban him, if is a single kid with a little dc you can nullroute or ask to your provider if he can.

At least do you have a firewall in your server?

There are no software solution to that kind of problem. DDoS protection (shielding) is not a good choice and it very expensive, at least in the company you mentioned above.
It's best to buy a server with some good protection together.

Iptables will give you a much more robust feature set then a NAT firewall alone. Especially if you start getting into addons like xtables.
