Need help activating windows 7

Recently my windows have been telling me that my "windows-exemplar" isnt real, when I try to activate it using the product key writte on my computer, I get the following; The product key you entered does not work with this release of Windows 7.

Install Windows 7, or specify a product key for Windows 7 ulitmate.

I have no clue why it says this, you might think its obvious, duh you dont got windows 7 ultimate?!
