NPC Tutorials

I think it would be great if someone really went into depth about NPCs and how they work. Currently I've looked at some and they seem pretty confusing at first glance, but I know a lot of people out there are just breezing through this stuff - making custom Npcs and spiffy things like that with ease.

So would anyone care to enlighten us with a good tutorial?
