Portforwarding Question

Do modems need port forwarding? And more importantly can i host a server using just a modem and no routers involved?

Thanks for everyone's help, it seems as though i found my answer earlier today. Turns out ports 7171,7172, and 8000 are all open when i ran a test. Thanks though! =]
